History Williams College

Imagine if you will, a certain Colonel Ephraim Williams, decked out in his Massachusetts militia uniform. Not just a brave soldier, but a member of a distinguished land-owning family, he breathed his last on the bloody battleground of Lake George on September 8, 1755. Now, wills often carry bizarre requests, but Colonel Williams's landed with a thump: he left a hefty sum of money to start a free school in West Hoosac, Massachusetts. The condition? Change the town's name to Williamstown. Pretty cheeky, don't you think?

Fast-forward a bit, and the seeds of Williams’s dream were finally planted in 1765, when the western township became Williamstown. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The final charter granting the school status wasn’t handed over until 1795 by the Massachusetts legislature. Can you imagine the sort of patience it must have taken?

One fine morning on October 26, 1791, the Williamstown Free School threw open its doors, with Ebenezer Fitch taking on the mantle of the first president. With just 15 students in tow, it soon became clear that this wasn’t just any other school. The ambitious trustees quickly petitioned to transform it into a tuition-based college. With a nod from the legislature in 1793, Williams College was officially born, the second in Massachusetts history.

Now, nobody’s perfect and Williams College wasn’t an exception. The campus originally had a no-black-students policy, a discriminatory rule directly challenged by Lucy Terry Prince, the first black American poet. Despite her notable speech skills and scripture-quoting prowess, she was unable to secure her son’s admission. However, recent insights suggest that insufficient language skills rather than racial discrimination may have been the barrier.

In 1806, an innocent student prayer meeting gave birth to the American Foreign Mission Movement. It all began in a maple grove in Sloan's Meadow, where five students gathered to pray. Believe it or not, this prayer meeting under a haystack gave rise to the first American organization to send missionaries overseas. Today, the Haystack Monument on the Williams Campus pays homage to this humble beginning.

Despite the initial hiccups, Williams College held its ground and transformed into one of the best liberal arts colleges in the world. From battling financial troubles in 1815 to phasing out of fraternities in 1962, to achieving an acceptance rate of 8% for the class of 2025, the college has traversed a journey of resilience. A far cry from its early days of segregation, the college now sees women representing 45.6% of full-time faculty and 51.6% of the undergraduate class, as of 2021.

As more progress was made, the appearance of the college started changing too. The early 2000s saw a flurry of construction activity and modernization, with new buildings and renovations adding a touch of modernity to the classic layout. Even though economic uncertainties led to project delays, it didn't halt the progress. Structures like Paresky Center, the Unified Science Center, Hollander Hall, and Schapiro Hall stand as proud examples of the college's evolution.

Williams College also introduced an affirmative action program in 1972, prioritizing the hiring of women and African-American faculty. The increase in women faculty during this period was significant, from 4.5% in 1972 to 11.7% in 1975. Additionally, the college also had its fair share of influential women, with Beatrice Irene Wasserscheid and Emily Cleland being early pioneers.

The college has a history of educators and presidents who have left indelible marks on its growth. Edward Dorr Griffin, Morton O. Schapiro, and Maud Mandel, to name just a few, have all contributed to shaping Williams College into the revered institution it is today. With the elimination of student loans from all financial aid packages in the 2008-09 school year, the college continues its legacy of providing accessible education to all.

And there you have it, a glimpse into the fascinating saga of Williams College. From the militia officer’s last wish to becoming one of the world’s most respected liberal arts colleges, the journey has been a testimony to vision, tenacity, the importance of inclusivity, and, of course, the transformative power of education.
