Little could anyone from the 19th Century have predicted what a humble teacher's training center would transform into. Back in 1889, the Connecticut General Assembly took a significant decision that would leave a lasting legacy. They established the Willimantic State Normal School, whose primary purpose was to groom schoolteachers for becoming the future stimulating minds of the American society. Its humble beginnings comprised a group of thirteen promising females, eager to guide future generations. Their perseverance called a dilapidated third floor of the Willimantic Savings Institute as their classroom.
By the time 1893 came knocking, history was ready to witness a twist at this institution. We notched up a significant milestone by embracing our first male student. As we grew, so did the recognition of the fact that an environment conducive to learning was needed. It seemed as though the Town of Windham heard this silent plea as they generously donated a vast expanse of 6 acres (24,000 m2) to the State of Connecticut by 1890. The purpose? Enabling us to construct a new campus where hearts could meet minds.
The subsequent five years saw the hammers and nails working full swing, and by 1895, the larger campus breathed its first breath. Conversations flowed, friendships blossomed, and knowledge spread its roots deep into the minds of the aspiring educators. Soon enough, the campus saw the rise of Burr Hall, the first dormitory, in September 1921.
The olden days might remember our institution as the Willimantic State Teachers College. The rechristening happened in 1937, marking a new era where the institution wasn't just training teachers but started granting them bachelor's degrees. However, all wasn't smooth sailing. The original Normal School building was caught by the cruel jaws of a fire. Yet, from the ashes emerged Shafer Hall, a beacon of hope, and dedicated back to learning in 1946.
The decade from 1950 witnessed the State College making remarkable strides in the field of academics. For the first time, a graduate program in education was introduced in 1953. As the campus and program expanded, so did our aspirations. It led to us evolving into the Eastern Connecticut State College in 1967.
The 1980s were an exciting time as the institution underwent another identity change, and this time it was permanent. In 1983, Eastern Connecticut State University was the name that echoed through the hallways, classrooms, and playgrounds. From a modest teachers' training center to a dynamic, comprehensive university offering an array of subjects, the journey has been truly enriching.
