The university has aptly been christened after Washington Manly Wingate, a previous honcho at Wake Forest College. However, history is always a complex weave- in 2021, Wingate University, owing to Wake Forest University's decision, acknowledged Washington Wingate's controversial past as a slave owner, pledging to address this in some capacity.
The initial days of The Wingate School were all about rendering primary and secondary education, a service it rendered until public schools sprouted far and wide in the early 20th century.
