Deep in the heart of Florida lies Rollins College, an institution with a rich tapestry of history, set forth by passionate educational pioneers in the late 19th century. Florida's fourth oldest post-secondary school, Rollins College, carries a unique heritage rooted in independent, nonsectarian coeducation since its inception. A visionary woman, Lucy Cross, popular as the "Mother of Rollins College," deserves much of the credit for sowing the seeds of tertiary education in Florida.
Cross, the founder of the Daytona Institute for Young Women, proposed the creation of a Florida college to the Congregational Churches in 1884. By the next year, she joined the committee responsible for finding a location for their first Florida institution. The historical Lyman Park building in Sanford, Florida, witnessed the incarnation of Rollins College on April 28, 1885. It was a dream manifested by New England Congregationalists, who aimed to bring their style of liberal arts education to the St. John's basin frontier.
The college opened its doors to eager students in Winter Park on November 4, matching the year of its establishment. Its founders earned recognition through a commemorative plaque dedicated on March 1, 1954. Displayed in historic Downtown Sanford, these names serve as a testament to the pioneers of Florida's educational landscape.
Distinguished individuals like Alonzo Rollins, a Chicago-based businessman and the college's namesake, made significant contributions, helping to establish the institution. Rollins' benevolence extended to serve as a trustee and the college's first treasurer. Another notable name, Franklin Fairbanks from St. Johnsbury, Vermont, lent his weight to the cause. The president of Fairbanks Scales family business, he also played dual roles, as a founder of Winter Park and a Rollins College donor.
Despite facing occasional tribulations, Rollins College found favor in high-ranking positions across the United States. The footsteps of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama, graced the campus during various periods, with Roosevelt even conferred an honorary literature degree at the college in 1936.
However, adversity knocked as President Hamilton Holt insisted on a "loyalty pledge" from all professors, leading to the widely publicized dismissal of atheist scholar John Andrew Rice and three others in what famously became known as the "Rollins College Case." Undeterred, the dismissed educators went ahead to found the experimental Black Mountain College.
Rollins College also made headlines internationally in 1994 when a war-looted statue was requested back by Japan. The statue ended up in Okinawa in 1995, further cementing international ties between Rollins and Shogaku Junior and Senior High School in Okinawa. This cooperative spirit remains an integral part of the college's ethos.
However, like any institution, Rollins has had its share of heartache and controversy. The tragic death of sophomore student Jennifer Leah Kairis in 1998 stirred up a lengthy state investigation and much-needed reflections on student safety.
Subsequent security threats in 2011 led to updated safety measures to protect students and faculty, further benefiting from a full-scale drill in 2014 to prepare for any hostile incidents on campus. Rollins College remains a bastion of learning and community to this day, continuously evolving while carrying its esteemed history forward. This prestigious institution, born out of a thirst for quality liberal arts education in the late 19th century, continues its journey advancing the cause of knowledge and innovation.
