Our incredible journey kicked off when Tabitha Moffatt Brown, a resolute pioneer from Massachusetts, blazed the trail to the Oregon Country via the fresh Applegate Trail. Her year? 1846. After she moved, she found an ally in Harvey L. Clark and together, they built a school and an orphanage, back in 1847, right in the heart of Forest Grove. Their purpose? To offer hope and a sanctuary for the orphans of the Applegate Trail party.
By March of 1848, the duo's orphanage evolved, giving birth to Tualatin Academy. Clark generously handed over 200 acres (80.9 ha) of his own land to the emerging school. George H. Atkinson, with much persuasion, advocated the Academy's establishment and significant support from Presbyterians and Congregationalists ensured its growth. The very first class of Tualatin Academy was filled with bright-eyed pupils excited to learn from Eliza Hart Spalding, originally a part of the Whitman Mission.
September 29th of 1849 saw the territorial legislature bestow an official charter upon Tualatin Academy. Clark added to his initial donation, giving the school another generous portion of land—150 acres (60.7 ha). The school, always evolving, witnessed the rise of its first edifice, now known as Old College Hall, in 1851. 1853 saw Sidney H. Marsh bring his leadership wisdom to the institution, becoming its first president. The campus we know today traces its roots back to a land granted the same year.
Pushing forward and expanding its horizons, the institution officially adopted the name Pacific University in 1854. It was not long after, in 1863, when Pacific University celebrated its inaugural commencement ceremony, proudly watched by its lone but worthy graduate, Harvey W. Scott. History was birthed yet again in 1872, as Hatstara Tamura, Kin Saito, and Yei Nosea – three brave students from Japan - commenced their studies here. Their enrolment was part of Japan's impressive modernization move and all of them graduated in 1876.
Fast forward to 1895 and you'll find Marsh Hall standing tall, a crowning jewel in the Pacific's campus. Moving further down the timeline brings us to the opening of Carnegie Library (now Carnegie Hall) in 1912, made possible through the financial aid extended by Andrew Carnegie's foundation. This brick testament to knowledge was carefully designed by the esteemed architecture firm of Whidden and Lewis. Tualatin Academy retired in 1915, making way for public high schools, leaving Pacific University by 1920 boasting five buildings sprawled across 30 acres (12.1 ha) of land, sheltered by an endowment of a sizable $250,000.
In 1975, Marsh Hall faced a devastating fire that crippled it onto its shell. The resilient spirit of the campus held strong and the structure was reopened in 1977. Pacific University saw a succession of presidents, the 16th being Phillip D. Creighton who took office in 2003 and retired in 2009, making way for the 17th president, Lesley M. Hallick, to step in.
An interesting memento enriching our history is the bronze Chinese statue that found its way to the university in 1896, gifted by alumnus J.E. Walker and his mother. The mythical Chinese creature, named Qilin, was later nicknamed Boxer by the Chinese and Japanese students as a sign of the community's cultural diversity, eventually becoming the university's official mascot by 1968.
Over the years, Pacific University's legacy has been woven with stories of tradition, courage, diversity, and a strong pursuit of knowledge, emboldening students from all walks of life to join us and be a part of our incredible history.
