It all began with the vision of a successful businessman, Jonas Gilman Clark. On January 17, 1887, he crafted a plan to build a university in Worcester and even announced this grand plan. Armed with his petition, Jonas approached the Massachusetts Legislature requesting a charter for his dream, Clark University.
By March 31 that same year, the legislature granted their approval and signed off. The governor was on board too. But creating a university that incorporated the best of what Europe and America offer was no small ambition. Jonas took inspiration from Cornell University and Johns Hopkins in particular.
Borrowing a leaf from his friend Leland Stanford's book, Jonas poured a whopping one million dollars into the founding of what was to be America's first all-graduate university. He would later provide an additional million dollars to cater to possible future deficits. On October 2, 1889, Clark University became a reality, replete with departments dedicated to Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology.
The reins of the university were handed to G. Stanley Hall in 1888. A psychology and pedagogy professor from Johns Hopkins, Hall proved to be a suitable fit for managing Clark. Interestingly, he embarked on a seven-month Europe voyage, visiting universities and gathering faculty for Clark. Hall, also known for establishing the American Psychological Association, was instrumental in shaping psychology as a respected academic discipline in America.
The 1890s saw key figures like Franz Boas and Albert A. Michelson joining Clark University. Boas, known as the founder of American cultural anthropology, served from 1888 to 1892, while Michelson, the first American Nobel Laureate in Physics, served from 1889 to 1892.
When Jonas passed away in 1900, he left his mark not only through his generous gifts to the university but also through his vision for a comprehensive undergraduate college. Though initially resisted by Hall, Clark College eventually broke ground in 1902, operating independently from Clark University.
With the 20th-century ushering in, Clark University took progressive steps. It began admitting women, awarded the first female PhD in psychology in 1908, and produced the first African American PhD holder in psychology in 1920. Clark University, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins were founding members of the Association of American Universities, boosting Clark University’s profile in research and graduate education.
To mark its 20th anniversary, Clark hosted none other than Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, bringing psychoanalysis to the American population. Interestingly, this was Freud's only visit to America. He received an honorary degree from Clark, one of the few official distinctions during his lifetime.
In the 1920s Robert Goddard, a pioneer of rocketry, served as chairman of the Physics department, and the university library is named after him.
The lore of Clark includes an appearance by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2008, speaking to a packed crowd of approximately 3,500 in the Kneller Athletic Center.
In more recent history, Clark received the largest gift ever in 2010 – a generous $14.2 million from the head of Hanover Insurance, the late John Adam. This sizable contribution enhanced Clark’s nationally recognized model of urban secondary education and reform, teacher-training, and community education partnerships.
From then to now, Clark University continually strives to adapt to the evolving academic landscape and societal demands. New buildings were erected, older ones renovated, and innovative educational initiatives, like LEEP, were launched - all aimed at bridging academia and practical experience for students.
The tale of Clark University captures its vow to academic excellence, adaptability, and commitment to diversity. Above all, this narrative reflects how one man's dream, driven by foresight and resilience, echoed across centuries and continues to educate globe-trotting students from around the world.
