History Worcester Polytechnic Institute

There's a fascinating tale behind the establishment of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) that begins with two industrial pioneers, John Boynton, a self-taught tinware manufacturer and Ichabod Washburn, the owner of the then-largest wire mill globally. In the mid-1800s, Boynton dreamt of a place of learning that would uplift the social standing of mechanics and manufacturers, focusing more on cultivating their intellectual capacity than their crafting abilities per se. Washburn's vision, however, included teaching technical skills through a complex system of apprenticeship.

Unexpectedly, both these visionaries sought the counsel of Seth Sweetser, a pastor, in bringing their respective visions to life. Upon learning of Boynton's plans of setting up a college, Washburn expressed disappointment but overcame it with Sweetser's sagacious advice and diplomacy. In the end, he agreed to build, furnish, and endow a separate Practical Mechanics department at Boynton's school, emphasizing that every student should blend theoretical knowledge with practical workshop experience.

Boynton and Washburn then jointly drafted a letter to influence the prominent individuals residing within Worcester County, sharing their dream of founding a Free School for Industrial Science. The letter was sent to 30 eminent businessmen, which ended in a meeting. And so, the wheels started turning. The news spread, and the generous people of Worcester rallied to the cause.

Through the collective contribution from more than 225 citizens of Worcester and workers at 20 factories and machine shops, they managed to erect the institute's first building. A few crucial land grant donations and capital were given by the influential merchant Stephen Salisbury II, who later became the first president of the institute's board of directors.

Amid cheers and applause, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute was recognized as a legal corporation on May 10, 1865, after receiving approval from the House and Senate. Alas, both Boynton and Washburn were not part of the grand inauguration of the college on November 11, 1868, as they passed away before the momentous event.

In the initial years, the reins of the institute were held by President Charles O. Thompson, who also served as the professor of Chemistry. The institute soon produced graduates who went on to become mechanical and civil engineers, eloquent artisans, and successful bankers. In due course, the Institute also managed to evolve its academic offerings by introducing graduate studies and an advanced program in electrical engineering.

However, Worcester Polytechnic Institute faced several challenges, including the lack of a unified library system, substandard maintenance of buildings, and the struggle to gain national recognition. Fortunately, Harry P. Storke, who served as a president from 1962 to 1969, brought about significant changes, which came to be known as the WPI Plan. Headed by Storke, the plan aimed at transforming the academic curriculum to better suit student's learning needs. This visionary move not only changed the course of WPI's history but also revolutionized science and engineering education.

In more recent years, WPI has continued to pioneer innovative programs in science and engineering. In 1992, WPI was one of the first competitors of the FIRST Robotics Competition, and based on this experience, they later introduced the United States's first B.S. in Robotics Engineering in 2007. In 2016, in recognition of its contribution to education, the National Academy of Engineering awarded the prestigious Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Innovation to WPI.

However, the journey of WPI hasn't always been a smooth ride. In 2021-2022, the institute faced a tragic period where seven students passed away within six months, five of which were confirmed or apparent suicides. Despite these challenges, the institute remains steadfast in its commitments to promoting academics and student welfare.
