Upon learning of Boynton's plans of setting up a college, Washburn expressed disappointment but overcame it with Sweetser's sagacious advice and diplomacy. In the end, he agreed to build, furnish, and endow a separate Practical Mechanics department at Boynton's school, emphasizing that every student should blend theoretical knowledge with practical workshop experience.
Boynton and Washburn then jointly drafted a letter to influence the prominent individuals residing within Worcester County, sharing their dream of founding a Free School for Industrial Science.
