As far back as 1867, Ohio's Universalist Church annual conference was stirring with the commitment to establish a college. This noble idea was bound to the Universalist religious tenets, sparking both curiosity and earnest eagerness. Hardly anyone could anticipate the momentum it would generate, causing Akron's notable business honcho and Universalist enthusiast, John R. Buchtel, to donate a whopping $25,000 to the college endowment. His additional grant of $6,000 to the development fund set the ball rolling, with many more natives of Akron falling in line to contribute.
Just like that, the course was set for establishing Buchtel College in Akron, named in honour of its most generous patron. John R. Buchtel's lifetime contribution summed up to around $500,000, a handsome figure to the tune of $16 million in today's time. His philanthropy propelled the university to commence in 1872 within a single building, fondly called "Old Buchtel."
Adding more feathers to its cap, the university received a kind contribution of $10,000 from George Washington Crouse in 1888. This timely donation brought a new gymnasium to life, known as 'Crouse Gymnasium,' which was celebrated as the finest gym to the west of the Alleghenies.
But, life had its own fair share of calamities in store. In the last days of 1899, Buchtel tragically burned down, with the insurance cover falling short of an estimated loss of $100,000 by $35,000. Amidst this ruins, Crouse Gymnasium stepped up to serve as the college premises, brilliantly transforming into seven classrooms.
Fast forward to 1907, Buchtel College made an audacious leap away from its Universalist roots. This gave the institution non-denominational status, an important condition needed to qualify for grants from the Carnegie Foundation. Buchtel College saw 198 students enrolled at the time when it transferred its assets to the city of Akron in 1913. This change led to the birth of the Municipal University of Akron, with tax money and the surging populace of Akron promising wonders for the university.
Akron University's growth story was a marvel to behold. From new buildings adding to its premises to more land acquisitions, the university was rapidly expanding. 1963 was a crowning year when Akron University got a state-assisted institution status, followed by its complete transformation to a state university in 1967. This was also the time it got its current name – The University of Akron.
Spearheaded by its 15th president, Luis M. Proenza, the thriving university undertook an ambitious $627 million construction project tagged, "A New Landscape for Learning.” Among the towering achievements of this period was InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, which hit the ground running on September 12, 2009.
Right from its humble beginning to its awe-striking growth, Akron University shares a deep-rooted history with Akron's rubber industry - leading rubber corporations, like Goodyear, Firestone, General Tire, and Rubber Company, and Goodrich, all had their origins here. As early as 1909, the university began pioneering the world's first rubber chemistry courses and today proudly hosts the world's first College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, founded in 1988. From dreaming the undeveloped landscape of wisdom to tapping into the rubber industry, Akron University has made a mark for itself, standing tall among other giants.
