Back in 1848, nestled in the picturesque confines of Allentown, Pennsylvania, a vibrant institution of learning was born. This was the remarkable outcome of the strenuous efforts by Samuel K. Brobst, a devout Reformed Lutheran Minister, who launched it under the name of Allentown Seminary. The robust academic atmosphere was cultivated from the get-go by Christian Rudolph Kessler, the first man wearing the hats of teacher and administrator at once.
In its early years, the revered institution underwent a number of transformational changes. From 1848 to 1864, it was known as the Allentown Seminary. For the three years that followed, it cracked opened the world of academics and military training, as the Allentown Collegiate and Military Institute. By 1867 though, its banner was briefly changed to the Allentown Collegiate Institute.
Now, here's where it gets really interesting. Still in 1867, a big move was charted out. Our formidable academe migrated to Trout Hall a grand residence that once belonged to James Allen, the son of William Allen. The college was baptized anew – Muhlenberg college, an homage to Henry Muhlenberg, the trailblazer of the Lutheran Church in the Land of the Free. Leading from the front, as the college's president, for almost a decade from 1867 onwards, was Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, a descendant of the great Henry Muhlenberg himself.
Fast forward to the dawn of the 20th century, specifically 1905, and we observe Muhlenberg College capaciously extending its wings. It acquires 51-acres (21 ha) in Allentown's West End, an urban jewel of Pennsylvania, to build its modern-day campus. But this wasn’t it for the visionary minds steering the college!
The year 1910, brought with it a surge of community demand for evening schools and Muhlenberg College stepped up. They began by launching a "Saturday School for Teachers". This grew and branched out over the years into a litany of titles such as "Extension" schools, manifesting the growing involvement of the college in adult education. By 2002, a monumental milestone was reached with the establishment of The W. Clarke Wescoe School of Professional Studies. Soon enough, more feathers were added to its cap with the inclusion of graduate programs that led to the rechristening of Muhlenberg's graduate curriculum as the School for Graduate and Continuing Studies.
In the recent past, 2019 to be specific, Muhlenberg College opened a new chapter in its illustrious history. Meet Kathleen E. Harring, a renowned social psychologist, who was brought in as the 13th president and notably, the first woman to hold this prestigious role. She stood on the shoulders of John I. Williams, Jr., the first black president of the Mini-Ivy college, who tenure was between 2015 to 2019.
So you see, the journey of Muhlenberg College is much like the ambitious student – constantly learning, growing, and transforming. So, here's my question to you – are you ready to be part of this rich legacy?
