The beginnings of Southern Oregon University reach back to the far-off year of 1872. At that time, the educational landscape of Ashland was forever changed by the Methodist Episcopal Church, who founded a humble academy. Ashland Academy, as it was known, was steered by the guiding hand of Reverend Joseph Henry Skidmore, its first president.
Over the years, the winds of change blew through the halls of the school, and in 1878, Ashland Academy evolved into Ashland Academy and Commercial College. Further transformations brought other names - Ashland College and Normal School in 1882, Ashland State Normal School in 1886, and Southern Oregon State Normal School by 1895. It’s a surprising fact that despite being officially recognized as a normal school by Oregon lawmakers in 1882, the school didn't receive any state funding. Relying merely on tuition fees and generous donations, the institution firmly stood its ground.
