Can you imagine setting up a grand educational institution on a patch of farmland? That's what the Reverend Edward Sorin, head of the Congregation of Holy Cross, did back in 1877. Reverend Sorin, who also founded the University of Notre Dame, named his creation St. Edward's Academy, in tribute to his patron saint, Edward the Confessor and King.
Years later, around 1885, Rev. P.J. Franciscus propelled the academy to new heights. He secured a charter, morphing the academy into a full-fledged college, rebranded as St. Edward's College. He increased the student count and brought together a highly qualified faculty. The college started growing, introducing its newspaper, starting baseball and football teams, and winning approval to put up an administrative center. Employing the architectural talents of Nicholas J. Clayton, a Gothic Revival styled Main Building of four stories high was born fulfilling the vision.
By 1903, disaster struck. A massive fire reduced most of the Main Building to ashes. Fortunately, the Main Building was restored by the fall. Then again, the infamous tornado of 1922 caused significant damage all over the campus. Still, it was resilient enough to be included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Year 1925 witnessed St. Edward's metamorphose into a university under its charter. Personnel of the Holy Cross priests and brothers were predominant. 1966 saw other significant changes as female students from Maryhill College joined the campus. Within five years, in 1970, Maryhill was fully absorbed, transforming St. Edward’s into a coeducational institution.
The 1970s welcomed a plethora of new courses like bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration (1971), the College Assistance Migrant Program, or CAMP (1972), Theater Arts curriculum (1972), New College for adults (1974), and Freshman Studies (1975). 1984 was a landmark year as Patricia Hayes, the second layperson, took the reins of St. Edward's University. By 1990, the student population shot up, crossing the 3,000 mark.
Got a moment to appreciate the increased endowment of over $92.4 million by 2015? Notably, the institution’s 23rd president, Dr. George E. Martin, played a significant role in this process. He served for a long duration from Fall 1999–Summer 2021, expanding St. Edward’s in various aspects - through new constructions, doubling the student base, enhancing the endowment, establishing global partnerships and initiating the Holy Cross Institute.
In February 2022, Dr. Montserrat ‘Montse’ Fuentes made history by becoming the 24th and the first Hispanic president of St. Edward’s University. She unveiled the Strategic Plan 2027 at her inaugural address, charting an exciting path for the university in terms of academic excellence, inclusivity, and social justice.
The university, between 2015 to 2017, sharpened its focus on grooming students for the overwhelming rapid technological, economic and cultural fluctuations. They built more connections across the Austin business community and educational institutions, encouraging practical know-how, research and diverse degree programs. The Campaign for St. Edward's University wrapped up in 2017, amassing a whopping $100 million in donations and escalating the endowment to $110 million. Meanwhile, the campus and technology improvements, estimated to be worth over $300 million, were successfully achieved as part of the 1999 master plan.
The campus saw new academic facilities like Trustee Hall opening in 2002 and Basil Moreau Hall, a co-ed residence for freshmen in 2003. A two-way science complex was completed with John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center–North in 2006 and John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center–South in 2013. 2007 welcomed a 756-car parking garage, while significant renovations took place in existing buildings like Premont Hall (2006), Fleck Hall (2007), and Doyle Hall (2009). By fall 2013, the campus library, previously known as the Scarborough-Phillips Library, opened its doors as The Munday Library, thanks to a $13 million donation from Bill and Pat Munday. Earning the title of being the highest donors, the Mundays later contributed another $20 million for university scholarships. What a transformation! Cheers to the power of education and the magic of history!
