Have you heard the story of Goucher College? It is a tale worthy of great novelists, woven with pioneers, strong women, and educators with the vision to drive change. In the early stages of its history, Goucher College rose as a beacon of hope for women seeking higher education during the time it was a rare opportunity. Notable women like the researchers Hattie Alexander, Florence B. Seibert, and Margaret Irving Handy, all Goucher alumni, marked their place on this extraordinary platform. So did Judge Sarah T. Hughes from Texas, who swore in President Lyndon B. Johnson aboard Air Force One - she too was an alumna, back in 1917.
The college has its beginnings planted deep within the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, where in 1881, a proposal was made to establish a seminary. The Competing ideas and skepticism didn’t hold back John B. Van Meter and John Franklin Goucher, dedicated ministers who argued for a comprehensive school for women. Winning their case, the Women's College of Baltimore City, as it was originally called, was created on January 26, 1885 and started its teachings in 1888. Just four years later, the first class of five graduates tossed their mortarboards in the air in celebration, marking a new chapter in the extraordinary journey of the institution.
John F. Goucher, despite being the co-founder and namesake of the college, was not the first president. He was offered the role but declined, which led to the appointment of William Hersey Hopkins, who had formerly presided over St. John's College in Annapolis. After Hopkins shifted roles and joined the faculty, Goucher eventually accepted the position under pressure, serving for nearly two decades. Both he, and his wife Mary Cecilia Fisher were also significant contributors to the college's treasury.
However, although the population at the college was surging, financial stability remained a challenge under Goucher's leadership. It was during his tenure, in 1904, that the college became the second in Maryland to establish a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, with this honor following the footsteps of Johns Hopkins University. In 1910 to honor Goucher’s remarkable contribution, the college was renamed Goucher College.
In 1913, Goucher College greeted its fourth president, William W. Guth. His era witnessed the rise of new residence halls and a successful million-dollar fundraising campaign. Even the U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, whose daughter Jessie was a Goucher alumna, pitched in with his support, bringing about a new dawn for the college. The following year, Goucher made it to the list of "Class I" colleges for women in the United States.
A significant decision was made in 1921 when 421 acres of land in nearby Towson was acquired by Goucher for $150,000. It was the foundational stone towards moving the college from its original Baltimore location to the Towson suburbs, a transition that concluded in 1953. Before this move, the college hosted a dozen sorority chapters, featuring Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Gamma Phi Beta, and Pi Beta Phi. However, these were disbanded with the decision to shift campuses.
The year 1986 was momentous as Goucher turned coeducational, prompted by a decline in enrollment and dipping interest among women in single-sex institutions. This compelled the board of trustees to open the college doors to male students marking a turning point in the history of Goucher College. Understandably, controversies erupted, but the decision eventually led to a rise in enrollment, and by 1986, the college saw its endowment grow nearly five-fold from $45 million. Even the then-president Rhoda M. Dorsey, who initially resisted the proposal, saw it successful during her tenure.
The former Baltimore campus, now known as Old Goucher, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, standing as an enduring testament to the college's rich past. Today, Goucher's timeless history is voiced by the preserved Romanesque structures, now re-purposed for various uses. The Towson campus too made its entry to the historic register in 2007, holding a proud place in the lineage of the institution, telling the remarkable tale of strength, vision, and resilience.
