Beginning in 1886, nestled among the scenic vistas of Washington's Lynden, one would find the historic foundations of the Northwest Normal School. That was when Phoebe Judson, a visionary with a calling for education, breathed life into a humble teachers' school. Though it was mainly attended by women, the school was also honoured by a handful of men's presence.
In steps came William R. Moultray and George Judson, Phoebe’s son, who decided to relocate the school to New Whatcom, present-day Bellingham. February 24, 1893, vividly marks the day when Governor John McGraw took to his pen and made the move official through legislation — and the New Whatcom Normal School was born.
As the winds of November 1895 swept through, an echo of progress was heard — the cornerstone was laid for the school's first permanent building, famously known now as 'Old Main'. With designing endeavours of Seattle's architectural maestros, Warren Skillings and James Corner, the building was completed by 1897. Unfortunately, monetary roadblocks forced the doors to remain shut until funds were raised for heating and lighting installations, and other maintenance tasks. The year 1899, however, saw the school welcome its first batch with open arms, comprising 88 highly enthusiastic students.
The teachers' school evolved into what we now know as the Western Washington University through an intricate passage of time and key transformations. The school underwent several facelifts, altering its identity along with the town’s nomenclature. In 1901, following the revamped name of the town, the school was renamed to State Normal School at Whatcom. In 1904, another name change adopted the new township merger, becoming the Washington State Normal School at Bellingham.
By 1937, it emerged as the Western Washington College of Education, making its mark as a four-year college. Decades later, in 1977, the institution was elevated to its university status, finally settling with the name we adore today — Western Washington University.
Meanwhile, the university witnessed an extraordinary growth era in the 1960s. In just one decade, it experienced a student enrollment surge from a mere 3,000 to a substantial count of over 10,000. Here, history was written as the Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies was established in 1967, pioneering non-traditional teaching methods. So successful was Fairhaven's model that it became a teaching paradigm for the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
Come 1969, the students made their voices heard on an international stage. They took to protesting the Vietnam War, and their civil disobedience involved the significant act of blocking Interstate 5. The same year saw the establishment of the College of Ethnic Studies. However, it met with substantial opposition and was dissolved in 1975,
Post this eventful period, WWU introduced the College of Arts and Sciences in 1973. This later split into the College of Humanities & Social Sciences and the College of Science & Engineering in 2003. Additionally, 1975 marked the inception of the College of Fine and Performing Arts, and the College of Business and Economics followed suit a year after.
Fast-forward to the present day, Western Washington University fosters a lively community of over 16,000 zealous students. Among the academic giants of Washington, WWU reigns as the third largest, trailing only behind Washington State University and the University of Washington. The university's journey, replete with rich history and academic successes, is an inspiration to students worldwide aiming to carve out their path in higher education abroad.
