Imagine travelling back in time to the year 1876. Picture a lush green farm named Caldwell Farm, spread across the beautiful landscape of the Carolinas. A Benedictine monk named Father Jeremiah O'Connell had just purchased this farm. His vision? To set in motion the creation of a Catholic educational institution that would shape countless future generations. With this unwavering intention, he turned to his fellow Benedictine monks from Saint Vincent Archabbey in Pennsylvania. Transferring the land to them, a new chapter began.
On April 21, 1876, Father Herman Wolfe, also from Saint Vincent, arrived at the property. Accompanying him were two bright eyed students, their lives about to change forever. Work had begun to transform the farm into the academic hub it was destined to be. So was born Belmont Abbey College, then known as St Mary's College. Just two years later, our college was ready to hold its first ever graduation ceremony - a milestone etched into the annals of our history.
Fastforward to 1904, we had the honour of hosting Katharine Drexel, a staunch supporter of our monastery and college. Then in 1913, we adopted the name we are now famous for, Belmont Abbey College. We are proud of our roots and heritage, our history shaping our present and future.
The year 1967 saw an extraordinary occurrence within our college walls. John Oetgen, the college's esteemed president and a Benedictine priest himself, was about to make a bold move. With the world watching, he presented an honorary degree to Protestant evangelist Billy Graham. This was an unprecedented ecumenical gesture that reemphasised our commitment to inclusivity in education.
Good news followed in 1972, when our college, initially a boys-only institution, turned coeducational. Then in 1987, we welcomed Sacred Heart College for women into our ranks, further boosting our inclusivity and diversification. Their campus gave us an additional platform to offer a chunk of our classes and programs.
In 1993, Belmont Abbey Historic District, having at its core the Belmont Abbey Cathedral, was proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With other noteworthy buildings like the Brothers' Building, Jubilee Hall, The Monastery, Stowe Hall, Saint Leo Hall and The Haid enriching our campus’ history and architecture.
However, like any entity with a long history, we've faced few challenges. In 2016, there was a swift increase in criticism from LGBT activists directed towards us and other religious colleges across the states. The basis of this criticism was our refusal to implement anti-discrimination policies favouring lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. Given our status as a primarily Catholic institution, the stance derived directly from our traditional roots.
In 2007, our college proactively removed healthcare coverage for certain medically advanced procedures after learning they were included in our policy. This sparked a reaction from eight faculty members, who filed complaints to various organisations. The repercussions continued till November 2011, when our college sought legal recourse against a new regulation that opposed our religious beliefs.
Throughout our history, the essence of Belmont Abbey College remains the same, always deepening our roots in the Catholic tradition while fostering an all-inclusive educational culture.
So, dear students and parents, are you ready to write your chapter in the history of our college and become a part of our ever-expanding family? Your journey awaits!
