The humble roots of Binghamton University trace back to 1946, nestled in Endicott, New York, under the moniker of Triple Cities College. Its doors were firmly open to local veterans coming back from World War II. Behind the curtain, orchestrating its founding was Thomas J. Watson, an IBM founding member with roots in Broome County. He saw a beacon of potential in the Triple Cities region that couldn't be ignored.
In its early days, Triple Cities College functioned as a two-year junior college, directly linked to the private Syracuse University. There's some juicy historical trivia for you. The campus? Watson gifted the initial land himself, a footing that would lead to the establishment of the school.
Switch the calendar to the academic year of 1948–1949, and Triple Cities College had already hit a milestone: Students could complete their entire bachelor's degrees right in Binghamton. Subsequently, in 1950, the college sought independence, breaking away from Syracuse and folding itself into the public State University of New York (SUNY) system. And thus, Harpur College was born, an homage to Robert Harpur, an educator and visionary settler of Binghamton's past.
Harpur's reputation quickly soared as one of the select two liberal arts schools in the New York state system. Its counterpart was Champlain College. However, the subsequent closing of Champlain in 1952 freed up an opportunity for Harpur to find a home for the displaced students, faculty, and 16,000 unique volumes from the Champlain College library.
By 1955, Harpur had grown far beyond Endicott and began scouting spots to nest in Vestal, a neighbor to Binghamton. A short six years later, and they'd settled into a sprawling 387-acre campus. Today, their Endicott building is a local landmark that welcomes visitors to the village.
When 1965 rolled around, New York decided to form an educational alliance of powerhouses by joining Harpur College with the schools at Stony Brook University, Albany, and Buffalo. From then on, Harpur was recognized as the State University of New York at Binghamton, a vibrant center for advanced degree courses. Remaining true to their roots, the undergraduate college of arts and sciences retained the Harpur College name.
A significant shakeup occurred in 1967 as the School of Advanced Technology was founded, which would, in time, transform into the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science. As of 2020, the school walks under the banner of Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science.
Come 1992, the once-junior college stood out from the rest of the SUNY system with a new brand identity as "Binghamton University," or "Binghamton University, State University of New York". No matter which moniker you prefer, both are welcomed.
As for the helmsman at the wheel of this great institution, the journey starts with Glenn Bartle and on to George Bruce Dearing and included the likes of C. Peter Magrath, Clifford D. Clark, and Lois B. DeFleur. Today, it’s Harvey G. Stenger, Jr. who assumed office on January 1, 2012.
With its countless transformations and relentless evolution, Binghamton University has successfully etched its name in academic history, standing today as a premium educational institution and a prized asset of the SUNY system.
