It all kicked off (as in started, not football style) with the inspirational duo: the then chief justice of Brooklyn, Mitchell May, and dynamic inventor, and philanthropist, Charles E. Patterson. They shared a dream to create an unpretentious educational institute accessible to folks from all backgrounds.
When the university threw open (not literally) its grand doors on that eventful September day, they welcomed not the usual coterie of elite students. Instead, the hallowed corridors echoed with the laughter and lively chatter of just 312 students, quite a modest crowd, and get this, most of them were the first in their families to attend university. Now that's what we call a 'first'! No room for aristocrats here, mind.
From those modest beginnings, it’s a downright miracle how the university transformed itself into this whopping educational powerhouse. By the early 1950s, the student body had mushroomed to 8,000! You could fill up a good chunk of Wankhede stadium with that crowd.
