In 1875, a compelling journey began, set into motion by The Sisters of St. Joseph. They opened an institute, aspiring to train dedicated women to serve the church through education. This pivotal step was the cornerstone of an institution that we eventually came to know as Medaille College.
Fast forward to 1937, the then known Mount Saint Joseph Teachers' College, started giving degrees to its students. An important milestone that emphasizes the importance of higher education. Medaille didn't just stop having reached this landmark, in 1964, it progressed to Mount Saint Joseph College, and four years later, it gained the identity that we all recognize, Medaille College. This period was indeed remarkable, most of the graduates took up teaching in Catholic Schools, right here in New York State.
In an unexpected turn of events in 2002, President John J. Donohue took some significant actions. Tenured professor, Therese Dillon Warden was dismissed and professor Uhuru Watson was put on suspension. Add to that, two other non-tenured professors saw disciplinary action. The alleged leakage of confidential meeting minutes from the tenure and promotion committee prompted these drastic measures. The fact that these professors were temporarily barred from campus caused a considerable stir. Several colleagues came forward, voicing their concern over this blatant infringement of academic freedom. A sobering fact emerged as Kenneth Weshues highlighted the considerable harm befallen many individuals due to a prevailing social malady afflicting the college.
Just when everyone thought the worst was over, in May 2021, the academic world saw another significant event. Medaille earned a sanction from the American Association of University Professors. Reported reason? The eradication of shared governance with the faculty, already grappling with the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Surely, this was not the turn of events the educators envisaged.
2022 brought about another change in the tide. Medaille signed a memorandum of understanding with the nearby Trocaire College. The agreement, a forecast of a cooperative future where the missions of both institutions were united and fulfilled conjointly. You may ask, “How was this association executed?” Well, six buildings on Medaille's campus were sold to Trocaire in January 2023. However, quite shockingly, Trocaire announced they would no longer acquire Medaille just a month after Dr. Lori Quigley, the then interim Medaille president, declared Trocaire’s intended acquisition of Medaille.
On May 15, 2023, an announcement that literally shook the academic world - Medaille was closing its doors on August 31, 2023. It was hard to believe but academic operations indeed ceased in Medaille on the declared date. Fast forward a few months; Niagara University emerged as the legacy school for Medaille. In adherence to New York State law, Niagara University took the responsibility of preserving all academic records, student transcripts, and academic catalogs of Medaille College.
The saga of Medaille, although ended, is beautifully etched in the minds of many. It not only served the students, faculty, and staff who lived through it but it's also an important part of history for learners like you and me, vital words in the chronicles of higher education.
