The genesis of the University of Buffalo, now known as the SUNY - University at Buffalo, was steeped in the early aspirations of Buffalo's city leaders, who from the initial days, envisioned a higher educational institute here. Although the initial attempt, the "University of Western New-York", chartered in 1836, failed to take off, the dream persisted.
In 1846, with Millard Fillmore, a notable statesman who would later become President of the United States, playing a pivotal role, the privately-owned University of Buffalo came into existence on May 11. Its primary purpose was to shape the physicians for communities in Buffalo and neighboring Niagara Falls, essentially starting as a medical school. Other prominent individuals actively involved in realizing this dream included James Platt White, instrumental in obtaining the charter and Nathan K. Hall, a state assemblyman.
With humble beginnings at an old post office, the university gradually expanded its facilities, thanks to generous donations and state grants. In 1849, the first building was specifically built for the university at Main and Virginia streets. The fledgling university quickly evolved, expanding its medical programs, introducing pharmacy, and acquiring a law school in 1891.
The early 20th century marked a significant turning point as the university envisioned the creation of a comprehensive undergraduate college. In 1909, they acquired the Erie County Almshouse grounds, significantly widening their academic potential. These expanded facilities paved the way for the formation of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1915, an undergraduate division supplementing the already established professional fields.
The following decades witnessed steady growth. In the 1950s, new engineering departments were introduced, and in 1959, the university's own AM radio station, WBFO, took flight. The 1960s brought some significant changes. In 1962, the University of Buffalo was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) system and renamed as the State University of New York at Buffalo. This move was strongly supported by then Governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller.
Following this, an extensive second campus started taking shape in the town of Amherst. Significant buildings, dormitory complexes, and a new lake became the mainstay of this North Campus, making this the central hotspot for University activities. In the late 1960s, the College of Arts and Sciences was trifurcated into arts and letters, natural sciences and mathematics, and social sciences. This division was soon to be reunited in the 1998-1999 academic year, merging back into the College of Arts and Sciences.
Boosting its reputation, the university joined the cohort of the nation's leading research institutions by becoming a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) in 1989. The university further hoped to expand its footprint and influence with UB 2020, a strategic planning initiative launched in 2004. Key to this ambitious plan was an anticipated growth of 40% in faculty, students, and the university's economic impact.
By the dawn of the 21st century, the university was making huge strides. President Obama highlighted UB's excellence, choosing it as the platform to talk about needed education reform in the country. A generous alumni donation of $40 million from George Melvin Ellis Jr. gave a significant fillip to the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. In the same vein, a subsequent donation of $30 million from Jeremy Jacobs and his family led to the renaming of the medical school to the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
In light of a progressive societal perspective, the university in recent years has also distanced itself from its founder, Millard Fillmore, and others, due to their controversial standpoints on slavery and racial views. Reflecting on its journey, the university stands as a testament to the vision and determination of those early city leaders of Buffalo, offering quality education to students from across the globe.
