Can you imagine a group of visionaries gathered in a meeting in Shoshone in 1884, debating the future of education in the Idaho Territory? Well, that's exactly what the Presbyterian Church's Wood River Presbytery was doing. They had a bold idea, to establish a college that would help shape the minds of the young generation.
It was William Judson Boone who led the charge. A group of citizens from Caldwell, under his guidance, had a great offer for the Presbytery in 1890. They were ready to house this fascinating venture in their beloved town. They planted seeds for the dream, later known as The College of Idaho, 133 years ago.
In 1891, the ambitious plan turned into reality. Reverend Dr. William Judson Boone, with the backing of the Wood River Presbytery, founded the College. Intent on providing quality education, they were eager to open their doors to knowledge seekers on October 7, 1891. A modest yet motivated group of nineteen students initiated their academic journey at the College that day.
These first classes were not held in majestic halls, but in the humble Caldwell Presbyterian Church downtown. A year later, they found their own downtown abode. A decade later, in 1910, the college expanded its horizons to the east side of town. This was made possible through the generous donation of land by Henry and Carrie Blatchley.
On this new land, the first buildings to grace the campus were Sterry Hall and Finney Hall. Sterry Hall functioned as a classroom and administration building, while Finney was the first residence hall. Welcoming more residential students, Voorhees residence hall was established only two years later.
In 1893, the college became a trusted entity. It was incorporated under the laws of the State of Idaho and was handed over to a self-sustaining board of trustees. Dr. Boone, the founding father, carried the mantle of the college's president for a staggering 45 years until his demise in 1936.
Fast forward to 1991, a name change occurred. The college's board of trustees unanimously decided to rename it as Albertson College of Idaho. This was an honorable gesture to recognize long-time donors Joe Albertson and his wife Kathryn. The couple, founders of Albertson's Inc., one of the country's largest supermarket chains, were indeed ex-students of the college, having met in a chemistry class.
The college carried the Albertson name until October 10, 2007. On this day, an important announcement came from college president Bob Hoover. The college's name would revert to The College of Idaho, with mutual agreement from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation. This change resonated well with alumni who were disheartened by the earlier name change and contributed towards it gaining financial support from them.
Interestingly, this name reversion coincided with a mammoth gift from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation: A whopping $50 million donation to the college! The College of Idaho, with its rich history and enduring commitment to education, continues to spread the light of knowledge, inspired by its inception back in 1884.
