In the early days of 1773, a frontier Latin school known as Carlisle Grammar School sprouted in the heart of Western Pennsylvania. Carlisle's elite, people like James Wilson and John Montgomery, had a vision. They saw this humble school transformed into a college. They were not alone. Benjamin Rush, a distinguished physician and a leader both during and after the American Revolution, echoed their sentiments. Imagine, a conversation hatching the idea of a frontier college, unfolding on "Bingham's Porch." This spot turned into an iconic rallying point at Dickinson College.
With the right momentum created by this powerful trio, the Pennsylvania legislature chartered Dickinson College on September 9, 1783, just six days after the Treaty of Paris was signed. Dickinson was the first college to rise in a new, independent nation. The college was intended to be named after John Dickinson, the president of Pennsylvania, and his wife Mary Norris Dickinson. Yet, Dickinson College was a name that stuck. At the time of its founding, it held the unique distinction of being the westernmost college in the United States, positioned just west of the Susquehanna River.
Charles Nisbet, a knowledgeable Scottish minister and scholar, took up the mantle as the first president of Dickinson College in July 1785. Nisbet's leadership lasted till his unexpected demise in 1804. In the late 18th century, Dickinson had the privilege of nurturing Robert Cooper Grier and Roger Brooke Taney, both individuals later rising to serve as U.S. Supreme Court justices for a significant span of 18 years.
The journey, however, wasn't always smooth sailing. A string of financial troubles coupled with faculty disagreements resulted in the college closing twice, once from 1816 to 1821, and then again in 1832 due to unresolved curricular issues. In 1833, they introduced a law school, which officially became an independent institution by 1890, and now affiliates with the Penn State University.
Zoom forward to the 19th century, where two alumni from Dickinson College held pivotal roles in the prelude to the Civil War: James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States, and Roger Brooke Taney, the 5th chief justice of the U.S. Dickinson shares the honor of being one of three liberal arts colleges, alongside Bowdoin and Amherst, to have graduated both a president and a chief justice.
Fast-forward a century - the 1990s saw the college grappling with financial difficulties due to mismanagement, which led to a spike in acceptance rates. Thankfully, the financial troubles were resolved thanks to the efforts of William Durden, the 27th President of Dickinson College. Today, Dickinson proudly maintains an acceptance rate of 35% and has managed to double its institutional endowment since 2000.
In the 21st century, Dickinson moved towards environmental sustainability, investing in wind power, operating an organic garden and farm, and setting the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020. In 2010, the Sustainable Endowments Institute's lauded Dickinson's effort, awarding them an A-, led to Dickinson College being designated as a "Cool School."
Thus, Dickinson College stands as a beacon of academia today. From its humble beginnings as a frontier school to becoming one of the leading liberal arts institutions in the world, Dickinson's history proves that dreams can become reality with determination, vision, and grit.
