Founded in 1887 by the New Light Reformed Presbyterian Church, Cedarville College's origins are deeply intertwined with its surrounding Presbyterian township. It gabbed the attention of young minds in 1892, two years before it was declared open to students. The reins of this young college were first held by David McKinney, who set the standard of leadership.
Steering the ship during rough times like World War I and the Depression was Wilbert McChesney, who served as president from 1915 to 1940. Distinguished by his seven terms in the Ohio Legislature, McChesney fostered growth by also offering his expertise as a professor of New Testament. His departure paved the way for Walter Smith Kilpatrick in 1940. Kilpatrick, a Cedarville alumnus, faced major financial challenges and guided the college during the World War II era.
Ira Vayhinger's presidency marked a new era in 1943, his tenure characterized by victories over enrollment challenges during the tricky years of World War II. Vayhinger’s previous experience as a finance director and business manager for Cedarville College equipped him to rally the college. In 1950, E. H. Miller took over the baton as president and notched a significant achievement by merging the college with the Baptist Bible Institute of Cleveland in 1953.
With the retirement of the Presbyterian board of trustees, Leonard Webster took on the responsibility of president in 1953. His diverse portfolio included hiring new faculty to augment the existing Baptist Bible Institute professors and promoting Cedarville at conferences of the Regular Baptist Churches. Under his leadership, the institute transitioned to Cedarville's campus via a merger with the college.
A sharp surge in student enrolment was recorded under the leadership of James T. Jeremiah, the seventh president of the college. Serving from 1954 to 1978, Jeremiah left a legacy of an accredited higher learning institution with the enrolment surpassing the 1,200 figure in mid-70s. His efforts were honored by dedicating the Jeremiah Chapel in the Dixon Ministry Center to him.
Paul H. Dixon took office as the eighth president in 1978, and during his 25-year tenure, Cedarville underwent major transformations, including the construction of facilities worth 100 million dollars. The college also expanded its campus from 180 acres to 400 acres. In 2002, Cedarville achieved the status of a University and in 2003, they affiliated with the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio.
William E. Brown dawned the role of president in 2003, introducing new online programs and several new additions such as the Pharm.D., M.S.N., M.B.A., and the now-defunct M.Ed. programs. Facing allegations of sexual assaults and other controversies regarding the academic environment, Brown resigned in October 2012, with Thomas White becoming the tenth president of Cedarville in July 2013.
Thomas White's tenure saw the university progress with new science laboratories, two additional graduate programs, renovation of the Jeremiah Chapel, and the establishment of the Center for Biblical Apologetics and Public Christianity. Yet, his strict policies led to faculty discord, which marked the start of a new era imbued with controversies. With the university's seal essentially unchanged and still echoing its founders' vision, Cedarville University continues its journey, etching its tale as it progresses.
