Stepping back in time, we journey to 1888, where it all began. Nestled in Barboursville, the birth of the Barboursville Seminary, an initiative of the Southern Methodist Church, marked an extraordinary event in the chronicles of education. It wasn't until 1901 that the name "Morris Harvey College" came into existence, a kind gesture to honour an unwavering fan.
The year 1935 saw a significant shift in the landscape of the institution. Charleston became the new home, encouraging an alliance with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Interestingly, just five years later, the establishment chose to step out of the Methodist Church's shadow, standing independant and proud. In 1947, another move molded its destiny, transporting it to a charming area - Kanawha City in Charleston, precisely across the scenic river from the State Capitol.
1951 witnessed the acquisition of an architectural favorite, the Young-Noyes House. This became a cosy nest for the college president, earning a worthy spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. However, the college's journey wasn't without turmoil. Post the military draft's conclusion, coinciding with the Vietnam War and the college deferment period, the institution survived an existential crisis. In 1975, it even proposed itself as a gift to the state, an offer which unfortunately got declined.
December 1978, the institution reimagined itself, shrugging off its old name and blooming as the "University of Charleston." In 1989, with the arrival of President Dr. Edwin H. Welch, the university found new direction and underwent remarkable transformation, both physically and academically. Since 1998, its development journey has been expansive, adding multiple residence halls, a parking garage, a fitness center, and an academic building inclusive of a library, computer and science labs, and even a new school of pharmacy!
2013 brought in the integration of former Mountain State University campuses in Beckley and Martinsburg, West Virginia, into UC's robust system. The developments didn't stop there, with the setup of a new campus location at Martinsburg, named UC-Martinsburg, after vacating the Martinsburg property. This was followed by a shift from the former MSU Beckley campus to establish a fresh campus in Beckley after the 2014-15 academic tenure.
Our story bridges to more recent times, as Martin S. Roth was appointed as Dr. Edwin Welch's successor by the board of trustees on December 15, 2017. Roth, formerly the dean of the business school at the University of Hartford, assumed his new role as University President on June 30, 2018. So you see, the long-standing journey of the University of Charleston is filled with tales of endurance, transformation, and growth, a beacon for any student keen to be part of a rich heritage and a progressive educational landscape.
