Decades ago, a college blossomed in the year 1955 under a unique name - Harvey Mudd. Imagine, only two years later, in 1957, cracking open new books and stepping onto freshly mopped floors occupied by an inaugural class of 48 eager students, 7 erudite faculty members, and lodged in just a single building- The Residence of Mildred E. Mudd. Now, right in its early days, the solutions for feeding hungry minds and tummies were found under the roof of the neighboring Claremont Men’s College, the present-day Claremont McKenna College. Science workshops, too, were conducted in what we fondly remember as the Baxter Science Building, awaiting the construction of additional structures.
Didn’t have to wait long, right!? As the calendar pages turned to 1959, the Jacobs Science Building rose, lending an edge to advanced learning. And before you could fully appreciate this, 1961 witnessed the birth of the Thomas-Garret Hall, and two years later, in 1963, the Platt Campus Center made its mark in the history of this prestigious institute.
Fast forward to 1966, the small seed of a college had evolved into a bustling campus with 283 hard-working students and an increased strength of 43 specialized faculty members. Remarkable growth, wasn’t it?
Now comes our heroine, Maria Klawe, climbing the stairs of presidency in 2006. And what a phenomenal leader she turned out to be! Thanks to her dedicated advocacy, Harvey Mudd stood out as the torchbearer for promoting women’s participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math in higher education. She exemplified that girls, just as their male counterparts, could triumph over these challenging domains.
Trouble, however, never announces its arrival. Neither did it, in April 2017. Rising tensions over demanding workload, race issues and a growing sense of distrust towards faculty forced a two-day halt in classes. Can you believe that? Vital factors contributing to this turbulence included the unfortunate demise of two cherished Mudd students and a student from Scripps that year. Not to mention, a leakage of the confidential Wabash Report on teaching methods, learning processes, and work pressure at Mudd.
Yet, the silver lining wasn't far off. July 1, 2023 marked a historic day in the annals of Harvey Mudd College - the advent of Harriet Nembhard as the sixth President of the College. What did her tenure bring? How did she confront the existing issues? That, my friends, would be a story for another day!
As you venture into these portals, it's essential to appreciate and acknowledge this cherished tale that's been the foundation of Harvey Mudd College! And remember, its legacy continues to grow, as you add your story to its illustrious chapters. After all, history isn't just about the past, It also about the future we create!
