Imagine it's October 14, 1887, and a group of Congregationalists, eagerly anticipate the statistical boom Southern California would experience thanks to the newly established transcontinental railroad. Dreaming of creating a collegiate exemplar, they laid down the foundation of what we today know as Pomona College.
Originally, they rented Ayer Cottage and held the first classes on September 12, 1888, in Pomona, California. But, fate had other plans when a real estate bubble burst, pushing their campus plan at Piedmont Mesa to the brink of financial unfeasibility. However, destiny presented an unfinished hotel site in Claremont, a nearby budding town. Hence, without a second thought, they shifted, without changing their college's name.
Call it pure grit or a relentless spirit of their trustee, Charles B. Sumner, that regardless of a looming financial crunch, the college hired its first official President, Cyrus G. Baldwin, in 1890, and placed the first graduating class by 1894. This class had 11 proud members who braved the stormy financial crisis of their alma mater.
But the institution only grew stronger. By 1905, under President George A. Gates, the college acquired a 64-acre piece of land identified as the Wash. And by 1911, it embraced a purely liberal arts model, integrating its separate music and art schools under its umbrella. It was not just expanding but embedding itself in the roots of American academia. Phi Beta Kappa honor society established a chapter at the college in 1914, showing the progress Pomona was making in the academic world.
A turning point came in the 1920s when the fourth President, James A. Blaisdell, took an inspired approach from the Oxford collegiate university model. He envisaged individual colleges clustered together sharing centralized resources, leading to the birth of the Claremont Colleges consortium, on October 14, 1925.
A turbulent global scenario marked by the Great Depression and World War II fundamentally changed Pomona's character. Enrollments dipped, and budgets were slashed. However, undeterred by tough times, the college stood its ground, maintained its resilience, and responded to wartime activities. It hosted an Air Force military meteorology program and Army Specialized Training Program courses in engineering and foreign languages.
The longest-serving president, E. Wilson Lyon, shepherded the college through its transformational phase from 1941 to 1969. Enrollment rose above a thousand post-war, enabling the construction of several residential halls and science facilities. The introduction of a successful deferred giving fundraising scheme pioneered by Allen Hawley called the Pomona Plan, secured the financial stability of the institution, inspiring others to adopt this model.
By mid-1980s, out-of-state students began to outnumber in-state students, tipping scale in favor of a more diverse campus community. The tenure of president David Alexander from 1969 to 1991 marked Pomona's rise to prominence on a national stage. As a result, the endowment increased ten-fold, enabling the construction and renovation of a number of buildings.
Battles were fought and won during the 2000s under president David W. Oxtoby, who laid emphasis on reducing Pomona's environmental impact. Committing to meeting the full demonstrated financial need of students through grants rather than loans in 2008 was a monumental decision, that spiked the enrollment of low-income and racial minority students.
A seminal change took place in 2017 when G. Gabrielle Starr took over as Pomona's tenth President. She became the first woman and first African American to hold the office, once again setting Pomona College as a trendsetter in reshaping the academic landscape.
While we have been navigating through unprecedented times since March 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the college to switch to online instruction through the spring 2021 semester, the spirit of Pomona College remains unassailable, as we march into the future with unwavering optimism.
