In the bustling year of 1958, humble beginnings marked the inception of what is today known as Columbus State University. At that time, a modest hosiery mill served as the venue for a junior college. Enthusiastically christened Columbus College, this novel institution of learning welcomed nearly three hundred eager students in its initial year. Fifteen dedicated faculty and staff nurtured young minds, instilling the thirst for education in each one.
By 1963, the college put behind its humble mill beginnings and embraced an up-to-date campus in the midtown area. Previously a dairy farm, the new location was a breath of fresh architectural innovation. Columbus College was not just another brick in the wall; it was standing out with its avant-garde architectural appeal.
Only two years later, in 1965, the junior college had matured into a full-fledged university. Now, it offered both bachelor's and master's degree programs. Progress was the rhythm, and Columbus College swayed along gracefully, witnessing its first batch of four-year degree program students graduate in 1970.
Continuing its journey of evolution, in 1996, Columbus College had a new christening. It was rebranded as Columbus State University under a state-wide restructuring program for four-year institutions. Growth embraced the university, as it began offering undergraduate and graduate programs across more than ninety academic disciplines.
As the new decade dawned in 2010, the university housed more than 8,200 students, a testament to its progressive growth. A major milestone was achieved in 2007 when the departments of art and theatre moved to the newly built RiverPark Campus, located in downtown Columbus.
RiverPark Campus was more than just a campus, it was a thriving community, designed meticulously for fine arts students. Larger studios, well-equipped laboratories, and expansive galleries all under its roof, the campus was truly a haven for blossoming artists. Right next door, the prestigious Schwob School of Music hummed its own symphony at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts.
A successful institution is often the result of committed leadership. At the helm of Columbus State University was President Frank Brown from 1988 until 2008. Before taking the presidential reign, he served diligently as the Vice President for Business Affairs. After Brown's retirement, Tim Mescon assumed the presidency in August 2008.
Then, in 2015, Chris Markwood stepped into the role and continued until his retirement in 2022. John M. Fuchko served as the interim president following his predecessor's footsteps. It was then that Dr. Stuart Rayfield took on the mantle. Her tenure began in the summer of 2023, her name etched in University's history on October 20th, 2023, with a glorious induction.
So, here stands Columbus State University today, a beacon of education that has thrived on relentless progression and dedicated leadership. While maintaining its commitment to innovation and quality education, this university continues to leave an indelible imprint in the minds of countless students. Indeed, its history is a captivating tale of humble beginnings, inspiring growth, and unwavering dedication to education.
