Our journey takes us back to the vivid past of the neonate United States in the late 1700s. 1754 to be exact. That's when the eighth King George II of England said, "Okay, you lot in New York, you can have your educational institution." Thus, was born King's College, later known to us folks as Columbia College. Picture, if you will, a time when British rulers dictated terms and there's a slight hint of déjà vu for us Indians!
It wasn't a walk in the park for King's College during the start. Pretty similar to how your mum wouldn't let you start on that second helping of Hyderabadi Biryani until you'd finished your spinach! Soon, came a ‘break’ - the American Revolution - and the college had to pull down its shutters, atleast temporarily. Talk of some dramatically timed coffee breaks!
Taking a long leap from there, across the tree rings of time, to 1784. King's College had a fresh coat of paint, and a brand-new name - Columbia College. Did I forget to mention? Samuel Johnson, the bloke who was the college's first president, also had an unprecedented return, akin to Amitabh Bachchan’s second innings in Bollywood.
Fast forward a bit to the enchanting 1896, and the college has grown a pair of wings and flown to Morningside Heights. No IRCTC or Google Maps required! Just the will, vision, and, of course, the real estate! Now, Columbia College was part of a big and bustling Columbia University. Imagine going from gully cricket to the Indian Premier League!
Head over to 1937, and we see women joining the fray. No, not Bollywood this time! We are talking about Barnard College, the women's liberal arts college affiliated with Columbia; it's like providing the cream to top our sweet gulab jamun, man!
Jump a little forward to the groovy 60s. The winds of change were blowing across the world; Columbia itself had a bit of a revolution in 1968. It wasn’t quite the same as our Quit India Movement but certainly packed a punch of its own! That's when students voiced their concern about the University's plans. Think about what happened when they tried to replace Bollywood movies with Hollywood on the local cable - uproar!
Slowly and steadily, as they say, "old habits die hard," and with a step into the fresh 1980s, Columbia College started shaking hands with coeducation. It came a bit late, but as we say in India, "der aaye, durust aaye" (better late than never).
Now, let's bring it back to present day. Whew, we’ve danced our way through centuries! Today, Columbia College stands high and mighty. Known for its core curriculum and promoting holistic development, it reflects the age-old Indian "guru-shishya" tradition where education was not merely about books, but also about overall growth and understanding.
And thus, our interesting little ride through the tunnels of time comes to an end. Columbia College – a name that resonates with the transformative power of education itself, and a charioteer on the journey of enlightenment and success. A bit like Shah Rukh's journey from TV serials to the king of Bollywood! So, ready to grab a piece of this history and make some of your own?
