Our journey begins on April 17, 1911 – this was a day of significant change, not just in Dallas but in the entire Methodist Episcopal Church of the south. They saw the vibrant metropolitan area of Dallas as a ripe ground to sow the seeds of education, defying the initial thoughts of merging Polytechnic College (now Texas Wesleyan University) and Southwestern University in Fort Worth. Robert Stewart Hyer, former president of Southwestern University, realized this dream as he became the first president of Southern Methodist University (SMU).
Having located this illustrious institution in Dallas, the spotlight shifted to the General Conference of the Methodist Church, particularly after a Supreme Court ruling in Tennessee in 1914 left them seeking more authority. The leaders noticed the forward strides in Dallas and decided to back this new institution, supporting its growth in tandem with Emory University in Georgia.
Back in Dallas, the gratitude of its people was marvellously encapsulated in SMU's first monument, Dallas Hall, in return for their generous pledged funds of $300,000. Constructed by Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge after being inspired by the renowned Rotunda at the University of Virginia, Dallas Hall opened in 1915 and was the alma mater’s symbolic centerpiece. Surprise, it also included a bank and a barbershop!
Although 1913 was the targeted year to start classes, construction delays of Dallas Hall meant eager students had to wait until 1915. Meanwhile, the only functioning department in SMU was its medical college, an entity acquired from Southwestern University.
With great vision, Hyer decided to give SMU a touch of Ivy League – he chose Harvard crimson and Yale blue as the representation of the institution's high standards. Such was the impact of this collegiate aura that streets in University Park and Highland Park were named after prominent universities.
Fast forward to 1927, when Highland Park United Methodist Church arose on the campus grounds, thanks to architects Mark Lemmon and Roscoe DeWitt. During World War II, SMU found itself joining 131 other institutions in offering the V-12 Navy College Training Program, a unique pathway for students to receive a Navy commission.
The late 1980s saw a turbulent time for the university’s football program. Repeated, blatant recruiting violations led to the imposition of the "death penalty" by the NCAA in 1987. This severe punishment suspended most of the 1987 and 1988 football seasons and implemented a two-year ban from Bowl Games and televised sports coverage.
A new era dawned in 2008 when SMU became the home to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, thanks to the university trustees' unanimous decision. This new edifice housed a presidential library, museum, institute, and the offices of the George W. Bush Foundation. Former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and the then-incumbent U.S. president Barack Obama came together to dedicate this center in April 2013.
The 21st century saw SMU soak in grandeur with its endowment surpassing $1 billion for the first time in its history in 2005 and raising an additional $1.15 billion from the Second Century Campaign (2008-2015). This immense financial surge facilitated the refurbishing of the Fondren Library, the construction of five new residential halls, and various other campus revitalization projects. As of June 2022, the endowment stands at just under $2 billion.
Recently, SMU decided to separate from the overarching control of the Methodist Church due to growing differences over LGBTQ policies. However, it faced a lawsuit that the university won in March 2021. The SMU kept on expanding with a small campus in Plano, Texas (1997 to 2020) which included the SMU Guildhall and other graduate-level programs, showcasing how it continues to shape its rich historical legacy with the modern demands of academic progression.
