Once upon a time, in the year of 1852, the quiet town of Dubuque bore witness to an extraordinary event. A brilliant light named Rev. Adrian Van Vliet brought to life the German Theological College and Seminary, which, after a gradual metamorphosis would go on to proudly bear the name of the University of Dubuque.
Inspired by the waves of migrating German farmers and miners to the upper midwest, Rev. Van Vliet, the pastor of the German Presbyterian Church, envisioned an institution that would nurture pastors. The aim? Equipping numerous eager communities with spiritual guidance. His house became their classroom and they thrived, despite the Dutch Rev. Van Vliet conducting all classes in German until 1896.
For 12 years, the school functioned as Van Vliet's brainchild until in 1864, the Presbytery of Dubuque took over. The passionate endeavor then donned a new identity as The German Theological School of The North West. That was merely the first of many changes. The real turn came in 1871 when, after Van Vliet's departure from this world, Jacob Conzett was chosen to steer the school. Under him, in 1872, the establishment found a new address in a sturdy brick building on the north side of 17th street.
Come 1901, and Cornelius Martin Steffens, the dynamic financial secretary, jumped on board. Under his wing, the school underwent massive expansion and funding. He pushed for a more rounded academic approach and thus, a liberal arts college and academy took shape within the school’s heart. Steffens's innovative thinking sparked a move to larger quarters in 1905, and under his presidency from 1908 to 1924, the University of Dubuque as we know it, began taking shape.
1907 saw the university burgeon in its present location on University Avenue, welcoming the birth of several buildings including the Administration Building (later named Steffens Hall), Severance Hall, the University Bookstore, McCormick Gymnasium, Peters Commons, and Van Vliet Hall. Only the loyal Steffens Hall couldn't stand the test of time and was replaced by Blades Hall in 1980.
However, not all changes were smooth sailing. In 1911, with the embrace of coeducation and a new name - the Dubuque Theological German College and Seminary, a storm began brewing. Come 1916, the school christened itself Dubuque College, only to find itself in a naming controversy with a preexisting Catholic school. After legal battles that lasted four years, destiny favored the Presbyterian school which proudly took on the title University of Dubuque on June 17.
Fast forward to the 1950s and 60s. Under Dr. Gaylord Couchman's rule, the university underwent a renaissance. New buildings like Smith Hall, Goldthorp Science Hall, and Ficke-Laird Library were christened and McCormick Gymnasium received a vast expansion.
The dawn of the new millennium wasn’t kind to the University initially. In 1999, following a financial crisis, 14 professors, including tenured ones, lost their positions, leading the American Association of University Professors to censure the University. It did pull through the hard times, however, and by 2005, it earned the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary School's full accreditation.
2003 saw the receipt of the Lester G. Wendt and Michael Lester Wendt Character Initiative's endowment, which prioritized the ethical character development of university students. And the Wendt name linked itself to another achievement in 2005, with the granting of a Wendt University Professorship to Dr. Paul Jeffries, a philosophy professor.
Despite some unrest related to tenure controversies, the University continued to progress. New student accommodations befitting upperclassmen sprouted on the city's main thoroughfare, serving as a testimony to the University's commitment to its students. Today, the University, with approximately 2000 vibrant students, embraces an illustrious legacy that started with one man's vision back in 1852. So, aspiring international students, if you're looking at the University of Dubuque, you're looking at a monument shaped by history, resilience, and a passion for education.
