Back in 1915, Charles E. Bunnell, an educator with grand dreams, landed on a snowy patch of land in Fairbanks, and thought, "Hmmm, this would make a good location for a higher learning institution!" This place, folks, was just a stone's throw away from the Arctic Circle, and it was here that our beloved University of Alaska was born.
It was congress that took the first step, passing the Morrill Act in 1862, which provided for land to establish colleges. But, it wasn't until 1917 (yes, a whole 55 years later!!) that good ol' Uncle Sam, decided to offer the same opportunity to the newly minted Territory of Alaska. Talk about being fashionably late, right?
So, Bunnell became the University of Alaska's first president, and we imagine him shivering in that cold Alaskan wilderness, dreaming about the impact this University could make! After all, it was a young institution in a territory even younger than itself. Bunnell had grand ambitions, he foresaw the university driving development, not just for students, but for the entire American Arctic.
Can you believe that at the time of its inception it had only six students? Bet you didn't! But don’t let that fool you, it wasn't long before it turned into a buzzing hive of knowledge seekers. Around 1922, our University welcomed the good news of getting fully accredited by Northwest Commission on Colleges, accelerating its growth.
Amidst the echoes of World War II, in 1947 to be precise, the University of Alaska scooped up an opportunity for expansion. With the acquisition of a defunct navy base, an extension was born in the beautiful city of Anchorage, broadening the reach of valuable knowledge to more students.
Fast forward to 1975 and the school took a leap towards weaving global connections. They welcomed the construction of an International Arctic Research Center, a beacon that promised international research collaborations, and boy, did it deliver!
Now, imagine yourself in 1987. The university is a blend of multi-disciplinary options, offering more than 170 degrees and programs. And what's more? They opened up the equation to the digital world, launching distance learning opportunities, bringing remote students into the fold.
By 2002, the University of Alaska had naturally grown into a system of its own, connecting three separately accredited universities under one umbrella. Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Southeast, each with their own unique identity, thrived together, creating opportunities for students from all walks of life.
Today, the University of Alaska counts alumni from every corner of the world, yes, even from India! Its research projects have global impact, it sustains an inclusive community, and it represents the enduring spirit of Alaska.
The above history lesson might have been a roller coaster ride but isn't that what makes a journey exciting? So kiddos, keep in mind, the University of Alaska’s chill history (double entendre ;)) is really proof of this: when you're built for greater things, even an Alaskan winter can't freeze your skyrocketing ambitions!
