From an idea sparked in 1991 to the thriving educational hub that it is today, let's embark on the exciting journey of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). It all started with Charles B. Edwards, the chairman of the board of regents, who passionately pushed the Florida Legislature to create a bold new state university in the Southwest Region. The law came into life when Florida governor Lawton Chiles put pen to paper in the merry month of May back in 1991.
Imagine the excitement when a 760-acre site in south Fort Myers was donated by Ben Hill Griffin III for the burgeoning university - the seeds of FGCU were truly sown. FGCU had yet to find its name, but it was already bubbling with potential. In 1993, Roy E. McTarnaghan, an executive vice chancellor for the State University System of Florida, became the first president of this unnamed university. The university team, still few but full of vigor, set up camp in downtown Fort Myers, thanks to the welcoming arms of Lee County Commission.
Fast forward to August 25, 1997, a red-letter day, the day of first classes held on the newly built campus, a date FGCU considers its birthday. In tribute to Edwards, whose initiative led to founding of FGCU, Academic Building 5 was aptly renamed as Charles B. Edwards Hall.
Enter William C. Merwin in 1999, as the second president of FGCU, whose vision was to mold it into a traditional four-year university. Merwin was a fundraising force. He managed to raise more than a fantastic $250 million for the university in a swift eight-year period! Thanks to this, FGCU bloomed with new constructs - the Lutgert College of Business, Holmes Hall, Whitaker Hall, and Cohen Center, to name a few. Student enrollment skyrocketed from around 2,000 in its first year to almost 15,000 by 2017.
Catching the torch from Merwin, Dr. Wilson G. Bradshaw became FGCU's third president in 2007 and was succeeded by Michael V. Martin in 2017. Martin, the former chancellor of Louisiana State University and the Colorado State University System, accepted the leadership of FGCU during the university's grand 20th-anniversary celebrations.
In response to the challenge for universities to improve their four-year graduation rate, FGCU introduced a program in 2016 named 'Soar in 4.' It offered to reimburse the tuition of freshmen who could graduate within four years, a strategic move which was celebrated among the student community.
A significant event occurred in 2017, when the College of Health Professions & Social Work was renamed the Marieb College of Health & Human Services. The transformation was fueled by a generous $10 million gift from Elaine Nicpon Marieb. The year of 2023 marked another milestone with the selection of Aysegul Timur as FGCU's fifth president, making her the first-ever woman president in FGCU's history.
The campus, encrusted with a variety of academic buildings such as the Lutgert College of Business building and the Holmes Hall, was home to landmark events. One example is the opening of the Herbert J. Sugden Hall and Seidler Hall, offering space for a range of disciplines. Around 400 acres of the campus were preserved for environmental preservation, showcasing the university's dedication to sustainability.
The FGCU library received a record number of 1 million visitors during the 2016–2017 academic year and boasted over 1.5 million items in its collection. This was coupled with the expansion and renovation of its library facility in 2023.
Today, FGCU stands as an epitome of success, growing from a mere idea to a university that hosts nearly 15,000 students, with aspirations soaring high. The legacy of FGCU is ongoing, fueled by the vibrant energy of its students and the dedicated efforts of its educators. It's an exciting journey, and it has only just begun! Future chapters of the FGCU story are waiting to be written by curious minds who dare to soar like an Eagle - the symbol of FGCU!
