It all started in 1893, when a new women's college emerged in the heart of Frederick. Known as the Woman's College of Frederick, this institution was the brainchild of the Potomac Synod of the Reformed Church of the United States. Do you know who was at the helm as its first president? It was the passionate Dr. Joseph Henry Apple, a young educator from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The college took off with a bang. The first year saw the enrollment of 83 enthusiastic women, taught by a team of eight dedicated faculty members. The location? Winchester Hall, nestled in the serene surroundings of East Church Street in Frederick. Offered courses ranged from the liberal arts and music to secretarial trades – a mix that catered to various interests.
The first class, comprising of 14 women, stepped out with Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1898. This was only the beginning; the curriculum expanded to include subjects such as biology, economics, sociology, political science, and domestic science. An eclectic mix, wouldn't you agree?
Now, let’s talk about the benefactor, Margaret Scholl Hood. You see, in 1897, she generously granted a 28-acre tract of land for the college campus. A decade later, as an honour for her support and the $25,000 endowment she secured, the college renamed itself to Hood College. Can you believe Mrs Hood's dedication to women's higher education led to such an impactful change?
Margaret Hood’s commitment as a patron didn’t stop there. In 1913, an additional $30,000 was provided in her will on the condition that the college bore her name. This grant supported the construction of Alumnae Hall in 1914, now serving as the heart of the college's administration and housing the sociology and social work department. Interesting, right?
Shifts kept happening. In 1915, the college moved from Frederick City to its current campus, bidding farewell to its former location. This location chosen wasn't just any place; Hood College found its home in the heart of a beautiful historic district. Hint: It even got listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002!
In 1934, the much-appreciated Dr. Apple, now the oldest college president in continuous service at a single US institution, retired. That's 41 years of relentless pursuit of higher education for women. Picture it!
More transformations rolled in by the 1970s. Hood College was contemplating going co-educational. Scary thought for some, would you imagine? By 1971, men as commuter students were enrolled, finally becoming residential students in the early 2000s. This change resulted from, guess what, a decline in demand for single-sex education. Only 3% preferred it!
Yes, Hood appeared to change with the times. But we should remember, the goal remained the same – quality education. To meet this, a task force was set up to decide the housing of the male students to ensure comfortable integration and management. And this didn't stop; the college built a new residence hall just last year, adding 201 beds and a home for the honors program.
So, that's Hood college at a glance – a journey from being a women's college in Frederick to a co-ed institution continually adapting to change, always keeping quality education as its core mission. Did you see how huge the impact of every person and decision was in this history?
