To his dismay, the Ohio frontier doesn't have nearly enough trained clergy. So, what does Chase do? You bet, he takes his problem to the land of Shakespeare and Harry Potter. Sailing the great Atlantic, Chase lands in England. There, he garners enthusiasm and resources for his cause from a diverse yet captivating trio.
George Kenyon, a nobleman whose influence is only rivalled by his title, brings forth his support. However, he doesn't stop at just monetary help. He also provides something more profound and long-lasting - his namesake. And so, our story's institution receives its moniker - Kenyon College. Alongside George, Chase also charms Lord Gambier, a character as intriguing as his name suggests. Finally, there's the kind-hearted Hannah More, the Philanthropist and writer, whose heartstrings are tugged by Chase's dilemma.
Picture this moment, it's December 1824, amidst the snowy landscapes and crisp winter air, Kenyon College springs into the academic world. But the journey isn't smooth. Chase isn't pleased with the initial location of the college in Worthington. So, pulls up stakes and, costly as it might be, he purchases 8000-acres of lush Knox County lands in partnership with Mount Vernon’s renowned lawyer, Henry Curtis. Their newfound paradise termed Gambier Hill welcomes them on an auspicious July day in 1825.
Fast forward to 1937, one year before the outbreak of World War II. Kenyon College receives a newcomer whose contribution will enhance its scholarly prestige. John Crowe Ransom, the professor of poetry and first editor of The Kenyon Review, has brought national recognition to the humble English department of Kenyon College. His contribution, you ask? Under his 21-year tenure, Ransom's nurturing hand has lent to the publication of works by such high-calibre writers as Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, William Empson, Mark Van Doren, Kenneth Burke, and Delmore Schwartz.
