Picture it - the year was 1832. Amid the historical backdrop of America, Gettysburg College was born as the sibling institution of the Lutheran Theological Seminary, now known as the United Lutheran Seminary. Do you know who we have to thank for this? It's none other than Thaddeus Stevens, a radical Republican and abolitionist of Gettysburg. The college was initially christened Pennsylvania College with Samuel Simon Schmucker bagging the credit of being its founder.
Several years down, exactly in 1839, and our dear institution was already bouncing with innovation. Esteemed figures such as Drs. George McClellan (the founder of Jefferson Medical College), Samuel George Morton and others, breathed life into the Medical School of Pennsylvania College, right in the heart of Philadelphia. But alas, the course of success does not always run smooth! By 1843, the medical school was grappling with financial struggles, leading to the founders bidding it farewell.
Turn the pages to 1858 and there was a glimmer of hope - a proposed fusion with the Philadelphia College of Medicine. Unfortunately, this deal fell through, precipitating the closure of the medical school in 1861. The impact of the southern states seceding took a toll, with students heading home and draining its income.
Zoom into the summer of 1863. Southern Pennsylvania was under the invasion by Confederate forces. This sparked the formation of multiple militia units around Chambersburg and Philadelphia, ready to counteract. Amongst them was Gettysburg's own - the 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia Regiment (PEMR), largely composed of brave students from our college and seminary. Mustered into service on the 22nd of June, 1863, they experienced their first combat four days later.
The Battle of Gettysburg wasn't just a poignant moment for the nation, but also for the college. Pennsylvania Hall, fondly called 'Old Dorm', wore multiple hats as a signal corps station and field hospital. Landmark to both Confederate and Union troops, this building was utilized for signal communication and surgery. Honoring the fallen heroes on November 19, 1863, was College President Henry Louis Baugher, who delivered the benediction at the National Soldiers’ Cemetery inauguration, following President Lincoln's legendary Gettysburg Address.
Gettysburg College's ties with this monumental battle are strong, hence, we proudly host multitudes of activities and awards commemorating this historical event. The Eisenhower connection brings prestige to our institution's legacy. Dwight D. Eisenhower, along with his wife Mamie, resided in a house across our college prior to his retirement, close enough to fall in love with our small town.
Post-retirement, the former US President wasn't a mere resident of Gettysburg. Considered a part of our family, he participated on the Gettysburg College Board of Trustees and even authored his memoirs in an office that now houses the admissions department. The legacy continues with his grandchildren David and Susan Eisenhower engaging with their grandfather's cherished institution.
Fast forward to the present day, our proud heritage ripples through the Eisenhower Institute, recognized nationally for its advancements in leadership and public policy, making it a distinctive offering of Gettysburg College. This story is not just about the history of the institution, but about the resilience, innovation, and leadership of people who, just like you, have walked its hallowed halls. Embrace your future here, and know that your legacy awaits to be etched in Gettysburg's grand history!
