Imagine being in the year 1890 when the United States Congress passed the Second Morrill Act. This law, mainly focused on the Confederate states, made it compulsory for states to show that race didn't determine admission into colleges, or else they were to establish separate institutions for individuals of colour. This was the backdrop that led to the birth of North Carolina A&T.
To meet the requirements of the Second Morrill Act and yet not allow African Americans into the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, the board of trustees were given the authority to make temporary arrangements for students of colour. On March 9, 1891, the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race came into being, under the North Carolina General Assembly, as an annex of the privately run Shaw University in Raleigh.
As just a fledgling institution, it began with only four teachers and 37 students. Classes were offered in practical subjects such as agriculture, English, horticulture, and mathematics. But the college soon outgrew its temporary arrangements in Raleigh. In 1892, the Board of Trustees voted to move the institution to Greensboro. With donations of $11,000 and 14 acres of land, the Greensboro campus was set up and John Oliver Crosby was elected the first president on May 25, 1892.
Between 1893 to 1901, the college was open to both males and females of colour. However, in 1901, the board of trustees limited admissions to only males, a policy that endured until 1928. In the year 1899, the college awarded its first seven degrees.
Fast forward to 1904, the college set up a 100-acre farm equipped with the latest machinery and labour-saving devices of the time, even providing much of the food for the campus cafeteria. In 1915, its name was changed by the North Carolina General Assembly to Negro Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina.
The 1920s marked significant milestones: the first female students were permitted in the student government; and the authorization to grant Master of Science degrees was given. It began the expansion of its holdings in the 1940s and 1950s, where it acquired a substantial 96 acres of land adjacent to the original campus in 1946.
The college evolved over the years, not just in name, but also in stature. It even played a fundamental role in shaping the civil rights movement in South, when in 1960, four freshmen famously "sat in" at an all-white establishment and demanded equal service - triggering what is now known as the Greensboro sit-ins.
Both the 1970s and 1980s were periods of significant change for the institution. In 1971, the North Carolina General Assembly brought all 16 state institutions that confer bachelor's degrees into the University of North Carolina system. Thus, N.C. A&T became a constituent institution and Lewis Carnegie Dowdy was reappointed as its first chancellor. Rising student numbers saw the university set an enrollment record in the 1988 academic year with 6,200 students.
In 2011, A&T Preeminence 2020 was launched, setting ambitious goals for the university. As a result, N.C. A&T became the nation's largest HBCU in 2014, a position it has held since then. The institution continued to set new benchmarks. In 2018, it was ranked as America's top public HBCU by U.S. News & World Report, and then moved into the numerical rankings of national research universities for the first time in its history.
In 2020, a windfall came in the form of a generous gift of $45 million from MacKenzie Scott. This donation, the largest single gift in the university's history and the second-largest ever to an HBCU, solidified North Carolina A&T's position among the nation's top-tier universities. Now that's a journey worth remembering, isn't it?
