In the heart of North Carolina, back in the mid-19th century, an important seed was sown. The Methodist Protestant Church, now part of the expansive United Methodist Church, decided to step into the realm of education. After contemplating for many years, in 1921, they figured the time was right to establish a college.
This idea took flight when the citizens of High Point decided to contribute their share to this noble cause. They generously offered 60 acres (240,000 m2) of land and a whopping sum of $100,000. Future generations remember that the college would be nestled in the city of High Point.
The architect behind the college's English Renaissance-style campus was R. E. Mitchell of Washington, D.C., who took assistance from High Point's Herbert Hunter. Come 1924, what was known as High Point College, was inaugurated on September 14th. The first campus featured only three buildings managed by nine faculty members, and an inaugural batch of 122 students, marking the humble beginnings of a relevant educational institution.
However, the promising growth tragically halted due to the Great Depression. The college came under severe pressure as they had to cut faculty salaries and resort to bartering at times to survive. Although a fundraising campaign of $50,000 was initiated, bankruptcy was declared on June 15, 1934. Nonetheless, the college was reorganized to reduce the indebtedness, paving the way for future expansion.
Fast-forward to October 9, 1991, and under the leadership of President Jacob C. Martinson, Jr., the college was renamed to High Point University, reflecting the offering of postgraduate degrees. They renovated every building and constructed new ones, adding a campus quadrangle and increasing the endowment to $40 million by 2004. When Martinson stepped down in 2005, his length of service was the longest among United Methodist college presidents nationwide.
The year 2005 was a turning point for the university as Nido R. Qubein took over as president. The then 92-acre university had an undergraduate enrollment of 1,450, operating on a budget of $35 million with approximately 100 faculty members. Under Qubein, the university transformed substantially impacting the city, region, and the state of North Carolina.
Since Qubein's tenure, the university has flourished from three academic schools to 10. The debt levels and financial relationships with lenders and vendors have been brought into question. However, the university has steadily scored the highest possible financial responsibility score of 3, placing it ahead of Elon University, Duke University, and Davidson College, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
Undeniably, Qubein's role as president has majorly contributed to the exponential growth. One such contribution is his personal donation of $10 million to the university. The university has received a total of $214 million in donations since 2006, enabling it to invest in the overall growth.
The support continued in 2013 when Ron Wanek, Chairman of Ashley Furniture Industries, donated $10 million, making it the tenth such contribution under Qubein's leadership. By 2016, the university had plans to invest $160 million in infrastructure, marking notable milestones like the opening of the Caine Conservatory and the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Despite the significant milestones over the years, HPU faced a stumbling block in June 2023 when the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put the university under a warning status due to non-compliance with the standards of student support and outcome, and disclosure of accreditation status. However, with the inherent determination that the university has displayed throughout its history, it remains integral to the educational landscape of North Carolina. That, dear future and international students, is the historical chart of the place you might soon call your academic home, the High Point University.
