A momentous decision was made on June 12, 1849, when the Disciples of Christ cast their votes. They decided to nurture the light of knowledge by establishing a scholastic institution. The location for their lofty vision? The village of Hiram. They found the tranquility and healthful ambiance of Hiram, located in the Western Reserve, perfect for fostering academic excellence, free of unnecessary distractions. Hence, upon the suggestion of Isaac Errett, this institute was born on December 20, 1849, christened as the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute.
March 1, 1850 saw the ambitious educational project receiving its original charter from the state legislature. And thus, on November 27, the institute opened its doors to eager minds. The initial audience primarily consisted of students from the Western Reserve's surrounding farmlands and villages. Yet, Hiram’s excellent reputation transcended state boundaries, attracting intellectual seekers from other states as well.
A crucial turning point came about in the Institute's life on February 20, 1867. It was at this juncture that the Institute elevated its status, incorporating as a college and adopting the new identity of Hiram College. The period between 1850-1867, before the institute transitioned into a college, saw the leadership of seven principals, the precursor to today's college presidents.
Two individuals played pivotal roles in shaping this institution -- Disciple minister, Amos Sutton Hayden, and James A. Garfield. Hayden, leading from the helm during the first six years, laid the institution's foundation. Garfield, a former student and later a teacher at the institute, broadened the curriculum ambitiously. Notably, Garfield went on to become the 20th President of the United States in 1880.
In 1870, a wave of change swept through Hiram College as Burke A. Hinsdale, a close confidant and previous student of Garfield, assumed the role of the college president. Despite having two predecessors, Hinsdale is remembered as the first permanent president for his enduring tenure. Hiram College's history saw other impactful presidents like Ely V. Zollars, Miner Lee Bates, Kenneth I. Brown, Paul H. Fall, Elmer Jagow, and G. Benjamin Oliver, each of whom served for a decade or more.
Fast forward to 1931, as Hiram was gearing to celebrate a century since Garfield's birth, the community was split over renaming the school to Garfield College. Supporters and detractors stood on both sides of this debate. Among the 2,000 attendees at the centennial celebration were Garfield's family members, spanning three generations. Although the renaming proposal was sidestepped during the event and dropped subsequently, it remains a memorable subplot in Hiram's story.
Since 1850, Hiram College's leadership baton has been passed down to various visionary individuals, each leaving their unique imprints on the institution's legacy. These torchbearers helped the college navigate through changing times, keeping its core mission of fostering academic excellence alive. Their collective efforts transformed a small institute in the village of Hiram to an esteemed college, revered nationally.
