Don't blink, let me take you on a rollercoaster ride to yesteryears, when it all started for The Art Institutes. Not too far back, we're looking at 1921, when The Art Institutes planted its first seed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the Artist League of Pittsburgh. Just a humble institution offering evening and weekend courses for busy young folks hustling in the art scene.
As years rolled on, like a good Bollywood plot, things got more dramatic. In 1952, Education Management Corporation (EDMC) took the reins. They saw potential in the little creative club and sought to transform it into a full-time school. And voila! The Art Institute of Pittsburgh was born.
Now, you must think, hey it's all hunky-dory. Well, honey, that's not how life is. Like every good drama, there were hits and misses, a bit of this and that. But through it all, The Art Institutes held strong. And by 1969, folks! They had their first spin-off brand - The Art Institute of Dallas. The wild west, where bigger and bolder dreams were made, was now home to a sprouting, thriving beacon of arts education.
Between the 70s and the 90s, our dear Art Institutes took a wild ride across the United States, opening doors in Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, and beyond. That’s more branches than a banyan tree, huh? And on this wild spree, they said "why leave the West untouched?" and invaded the pristine valleys of California setting up Art Institute of California in 1997. Darn, the 90s did rock!
In the meantime, the baby boomer generation was sailing off to retirement, and Generation X was on the march. Technology was on the rise, and The Art Institutes didn’t want to miss that wave. So, they plunged right in, swimming with the current, and adapted to the digital revolution. They introduced fashion, culinary arts, advertising, interior design among others. Fruitful were the 2000s, eh?
The Art Institutes realized the secret sauce. They understood that the world was a global village and thus, international partnerships started knocking on their door. In 2002, they partnered with the Laureate Education Group to provide educational programs outside the States. They said, "The world is a stage and we want in!"
But there's one thing you should know. Like a classic Bollywood movie, there were hurdles, twists, and turns. By 2017, facing financial troubles, they had to close down some campuses. It seemed like they had hit a plateau, but we know our heroes, right? They always bounce back.
So under the new leadership of the Dream Center Education Holdings (DCEH) in 2018, the institution bounced back. Kinda like the comeback of Shah Rukh Khan in his movies, ain't it?
And today, The Art Institutes continue to function, continue to impart knowledge, and continue to make dreams come true. Perhaps, the only difference is they're now dressed for the future, and pal, it looks bright. So pals, that's a slice of the good 'ol pie of history from The Art Institutes. Love it or not, you've gotta admire their spirit, don't you think?
