On a winter day, January 15, 1850, Ovid Butler's vision for establishing a new Christian university in Indianapolis received acceptance from the Indiana General Assembly. Respected attorney and university founder, Butler donated his property to host this institution, the development of which took five painstaking years. Finally, an auspicious day arrived on November 1, 1855, when we opened our doors as North-Western Christian University.
Located strategically at the corner of 13th Street and College Avenue near today’s Old Northside Historic District, the university was founded by industrious members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Interestingly, it was never controlled by the Church. Its charter emphasised the need for an inclusive, non-sectarian institution untouched by the stain of slavery and providing comprehensive liberal and professional education.
Butler University proudly stood second in Indiana and third in the United States to open admission to both men and women. It walked down a historic path by instituting the first professorship in English literature with the first Department of English in the state of Indiana. In 1869, a progressive step was taken when Ovid Butler established the Demia Butler Chair of English Literature, in honour of his daughter who was the university's first Classical course female graduate and unfortunately had passed away in 1867.
We take pride that, dating back to 1869, our Demia Butler Chair of English Literature saw Catherine Merrill as its first occupant. She holds the distinct honour of being the second female university professor in the country. This historical chair is currently occupied by the eminent Susan Neville.
The university opted for a change of scenery in 1875, moving to the charming community of Irvington, on the eastern side of Indianapolis, and adopting the name Butler University in 1877. Butler University had a short alliance with the Medical College of Indiana and the Indiana Law School from 1896, forming an unrelated version of the University of Indianapolis, which included the Indiana Dental College from 1904. However, the collaboration ended in 1906 when the Medical College of Indiana teamed up with Purdue University's medical school.
In a major development in 1930, Butler merged with the Teachers College of Indianapolis, the brainchild of Eliza Cooper Blaker. This led to the birth of the university's second college. The third college, the College of Business Administration, arose in 1937, while the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was established in 1945 following a merger with the Indianapolis College of Pharmacy. In 1951, the intermingling with the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music led to the establishment of the Jordan College of Fine Arts, the university's fifth college.
Our religion department, too, became an independent Christian Church seminary and a "college of applied Christianity" in 1924, undergoing several transitions before standing on its own two feet in 1958 as the Christian Theological Seminary. As you catch a glimpse of Butler University’s rich history, you can see it reflecting the essence of innovation, endurance, and acceptance. We welcome you to be a part of this journey of diverse thought and knowledge that continues to mould future generations.
