The emerging academic fortress, now known as Missouri Southern State College, took a significant leap ten years later in 1977. A couple of decades in, and our college was ready for another change, the one that would shape its identity forever. The diligent efforts of the faculty and students didn't go unnoticed, and the Missouri General Assembly took note. In 2003, they christened the college with a new name, Missouri Southern State University - Joplin, further asserting its significant presence in Missouri's educational landscape.
The campus experienced a burst of development throughout 1967, with a total of six groundbreaking buildings rising against the blue Missouri sky. One such gem was the Taylor Performing Arts center, completed in 1973. During Summer 1992, the Richard M. Webster Communications and Social Science Building joined its ranks, giving students additional spaces to mold their academic potentials.
Missouri Southern is an institution constantly on the move, and as recently as 2008, it started on an ambitious project - a health sciences building. Raising the groundbreaking ceremony on May 19th, 2008, the building was the result of money obtained from MOHELA, distributed gracefully by the state of Missouri. A year later, in 2009, the Missouri General Assembly proposed the addition of the Joplin Regional Center, under the grand umbrella of the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
In 2011, a tornado devastated the southern part of Joplin on May 22, just a day after the university's graduation ceremony. However, amidst the chaos, Missouri Southern emerged as a beacon of hope, providing emergency shelter at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center and coordinating volunteer efforts right from the Billingsly Student Center.
