Once upon a time in 1893, in a burst of audacious optimism, the seeds of what you now know as Southwestern Adventist University (SAU) were sown. Back then, it went by a humbler name - Keene Industrial Academy. It was the shared dream of a group of fervent Seventh-day Adventists in Dallas, who helped finance the initial property purchase to bring this vision to life. The inaugural batch of 56 students embarked on their academic journey in 1894, within the confines of a structure that doubled up as a church. However, this humble beginning was to pave the way for a bigger future; SAU received its present name in 1996.
During the winter of 1944, on the 2nd day of January, a tragic event changed the course of SAU's history. The West Hall boys' dormitory, freshly refurbished a few months prior, fell victim to a devastating fire. A heroic student named Reginald Maddison, all of sixteen years, alerted his fellow dorm-mates of the imminent danger, thus ensuring they made it safely out of the inferno. However, not all stories ended happily, one boy was injured while leaping to safety and two lives were lost to the cruel flames - Curtis "Lee Roy" Birdwell, then 15, and Virgil Dye, aged 17.
SAU is nestled in the quaint part of Keene, Texas, a town situated around six miles northeast of Cleburne, known widely as an Adventist "company" town. As an Adventist institution, this school woven into Keene's fabric operates on the rhythm of Adventist life, including the observance of Sabbath on Saturdays, when nearly all town's stores close their doors.
As you walk the paths of Keene, there lies a landmark - the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, home to several thousand worshippers. What's interesting is that it's none other than the Southwestern Adventist University's church and plays a pivotal role in the spiritual life of the student body.
You may be curious to know that the Seventh-day Adventist Church in America operates in a structured fashion through administrative units called 'unions'. Every union typically has a college under its auspices, a trend pervasive since the 1890s, an era considered a whirlwind of activity in Adventist history.
Let's circle back to our protagonist, the SAU, that has made a monumental imprint on Adventist education. Its journey has seen it transform from Keene Industrial Academy to a comprehensive university with an enduring impact. Originally, the institution even sold land to Adventist families and industries. Today, SAU boasts of being the heart of the largest Adventist community within the Southwestern Union, a region spanning Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico.
Like a hero in any story, Southwestern Adventist University has faced challenges, enjoyed victories, and experienced transformations. Yet it remains true to its value: to provide quality Adventist education to students like you who are eager to explore, learn, and lead. So, come, be a part of this remarkable chronicle and let's write the next chapter together.
