In the fascinating world of vocational training, one institution stands tall with decades of transformation behind it: Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech). It was 1949 when the Lake Washington School District laid the seeds of an innovative venture by introducing an adult vocational training program. Aimed at equipping adults with necessary manual skills, sewing was its pioneer program.
The years soon saw an expansion beyond the confines of sewing. The school embarked on its journey to diverse fields that now forms LWTech's rich course base. The adult vocational training evolved to include automotive, culinary arts, and engineering courses. They acknowledged the changing needs of the world, and thankfully, the change was well received and supported.
1978 was a significant year in the journey as the local taxpayers wholeheartedly supported the expansion through a bond issue. Pooling in the funds, a new learning facility sprung up on the northern outskirts of Kirkland at a site near Totem Lake. Standing proud and grand, the school opened its gates for numerous inquisitive minds in 1983.
1991 was another milestone! LWTech stepped away from the shadow of the school district to become an independent entity. This feat was not just a transition, but a transformation—a transition into a degree-granting technical college, all thanks to the rights and responsibilities granted by the state law.
And so, the journey of additions and expansions continued. The year 1996 greeted LWTech with the initiation of a dental program, the first such program in 22 years within the state. A new administrative building kissed the campus contours in 1994, and the institute was soon to imprint a significant mark in the 21st century's history.
August 12, 2002, saw groundbreaking celebrations for a new tech wonder! With an investment of $17 million, a 60,000-square-foot technology building was in the making, set to boost the institute with twenty more classrooms and a multi-level library facility. And who was behind this refreshing architectural infusion? Harry Cummings of Cummings & Associates! The design had insights from faculty, students, and regional employers, ensuring the building reflects the spirit of LWTech.
As the saying goes, growth doesn't cease until you stop trying. Proving it true, LWTech grew further with a satellite campus, located on the edge of Marymoor Park in Redmond. Launched in 2004, it replaces a missile-repair shop built during the Cold War era. This expansion resulted in a 21,000-square-foot building boasting five classrooms, a library, an auditorium, office, and eating spaces.
Fast-forward to 2011, a significant change took place. The Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, signed Substitute Senate Bill 5664, changing Lake Washington Technical College's name to the now-renowned Lake Washington Institute of Technology. However, marking some dismay, the Redmond Campus closed its doors in the spring of 2017.
Despite minor setbacks, progress did not stop. In 2011, a new Allied Health building with 83,000 square feet welcomed the college's expanding health services program, further enriching the institute's academic offerings. The institution continues to grow and leaves no stone unturned to deliver world-class vocational education, rightly making it a top choice for learners worldwide.
