Back in 1867, a visionary named Joseph Baldwin had set the first stone in the foundation of Truman State University. It wasn't Truman State University then; it was merely known as the North Missouri Normal School and Commercial College. Baldwin wasn't ordinary; he was emblematic in the education arena. So resonant was his work that in a mere three years, the Missouri General Assembly couldn't ignore it and gave the first public teacher's college its official acknowledgment.
Spanning 26 counties - Adair, Audrain, Boone, among others - this institute painted a distinct identity for itself in the academic environment. Basil Brewer, a poet in his own right, gave his college a unique color personality - a burst of purple and white, encapsulating their spirit in a college anthem called "The Purple and the White." The colors stuck and are still the university's emblem today.
Coming to 1919, the college grew and rose in stature to become the Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, commonly called Kirksville State. An unfortunate incident occurred in 1924 - their prominent quadrangle, shown in pre-1924 photographs as a lake, was reduced to arid land in a futile effort to put out the fire that devastated old Baldwin Hall and the library. Today, that quadrangle, lovingly referred to as "The Quad," is a pop culture hotspot. It sees students discoursing, playing, attending mini-concerts, and trading in fair fares.
The years in the lead up to the 1960s saw the college extending its reach beyond teacher training. Reflecting this evolved mission, in 1968, the institute became the Northeast Missouri State College. A short four years later, they adopted the identity of Northeast Missouri State University (NMSU). The university's focus centralized on June 20, 1985, with Governor John Ashcroft's landmark legislation. As Missouri's sole public liberal arts and sciences university, the focus wasn't regional anymore; it became statewide. This shift led to over 100 programs being cut in less than six years. Every program that couldn't align with the liberal arts mission met with this fate.
As we moved into the 90s, the university leaped on the national stage with its accounting wing and schools of science, mathematics, computer science, and literature. On the commemorative tenth anniversary, Governor Mel Carnahan put forth a new legislation changing the university's name to Truman State University, which we all recognize today. Missouri endorsed the name on July 1, 1996, establishing the university as Missouri's top-tier public liberal arts and sciences institution.
Fast forward to 2022, the university basked in the glory of the U.S. News & World Report College Rankings by being placed as the second-best in the Midwest among regional universities. And that, dear students, is a dash through the heralded history of the Truman State University. We hope that this story kindles your interest and inspires you to make your mark in this historical institution.
