In 1868, the brilliant John Howard Harris was moved to create a foundation stone for education in a region which lacked upper-tier learning institutions. He didn't know then that his idea would become Keystone Academy, a beacon of learning lodged between Binghamton, New York and Scranton, Pennsylvania. In fact, it was so unique that it was the only high school for miles, bestowed with a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the same year of its inception.
As the months rolled by, the idea of starting a school materialized, and in the following year, the first lessons were conducted in a local Baptist church in Factoryville. However, the transformation of Keystone Academy into something bigger was still on the horizon.
Among the key figures who were as dedicated as Harris to rooting and expanding education was Louis Arthur Watres. His long-standing trusteeship of the Keystone Military Academy, a muted echo of what the institution would eventually become, was a testament to his devotion. With his influential guidance, the school soon transformed into the Scranton-Keystone Junior College in 1934.
A torchbearer to his father's dedication, Laurence Hawley Watres also joined the cause. He remained a trustee of the school until 1962, gathering immense respect and the title of trustee emeritus, an honor that commemorates vital contributions.
In 1944, the school saw another change in nomenclature. Simplifying its title to Keystone Junior College, it shed the geographic emphasis. It wasn't until 1995 that the school finally donned its current moniker, Keystone College.
Just a few short years after rebranding, Keystone College acquired an impressive credential. The Pennsylvania Department of Education officially granted the institution the right to offer baccalaureate degree programs in 1998. A monumental pivot in the school's spiral staircase of history, it set the stage for further progress.
In 2014, Keystone College truly began to take on an even more significant stature. That year, the school was given permission to offer master's degrees. Endowing students with the added capacity of higher degrees, the college strengthened its role in the educational landscape.
But that wasn't all for the year 2014; the college sought enrichment beyond the classroom as well. The newly formed Department of Performance Music extended the melody of opportunity to campus dwellers and the surrounding community, breathing musical life into the sphere of learning.
Keystone College acknowledged its athletic roots, opening the mat to wrestling again in 2016, something it hadn't done for a while. More athletic buzz followed in 2018 when the school announced plans to muster a football team the following year.
Today, you can look back at the journey of evolution this grand establishment has taken since 1868. The bands and orchestras, the shift in names, the university upgrades, and the rebirth of sports; each chapter only added an extra twinkle to the shining Keystone College. From an unconventional thought baked in a Baptist church, this journey hasn't just etched a historical tale, but it has built a realm of opportunities for learning enthusiasts. Exciting, isn't it?
