Imagine a journey that began in the late 1980s. The University of South Florida embarked on an educational quest, coming to life as a satellite campus within the serene surroundings of Lakeland, known aptly as the University of South Florida Lakeland. Sharing its infancy with Polk Community College, it bloomed, attracting a student population of roughly 4,000 by the turn of the millennium. Innovations and ambitions weren't playing hide and seek, and in 2008, funding was secured for an independent campus.
This was also the year the trustees at the university christened the institution "University of South Florida Polytechnic". It was a name that held a promise - a pledge focused on nurturing minds in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. When such a sacred covenant is given, it needs a pedestal of honor, and what better place than a spot near the vibrant Interstate 4.
The initial sprout of this educational tree bore fruit under the guidance of architect Santiago Calatrava. In 2009, the Spanish genius was the chosen craftsman to design the edifice that would shape the visionaries, the believers, and the achievers. Yet, within such success, the seeds for a new vision were planted, by the most prominent backer of the institution, Florida State Senator J. D. Alexander.
His dream? To unite USF Polytechnic as an independent entity, christened as Florida Polytechnic University. It was a dream coupled with action in 2011 when he proposed a budget that encapsulated a wholesome $33 million for the bold transition. Not all hearts sang the same tunes though. The move invited controversy, jarring the harmonious rhythm of budgeting with its financial implications. But challenges make victories more flavorful, and akin to the acquisition of the new campus, several criteria laid the path for the future course.
The journey towards independence picked pace with accreditation, the construction of student homes, and curricular advancements in STEM. But Senator Alexander had greater dreams, expressed through a new budget that pushed the university towards immediate independence from USF Polytechnic. And so, on April 20, 2012, the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, gave an affirmative nod to the passage that established Florida Polytechnic University an independent institution, marking the end of USF Polytechnic's legacy.
July 1, 2012, was a pivotal date, as the law took effect. In an accompanying letter (legislation SB 1994), Governor Scott emphasised the role of Florida Polytechnic University in the State University System. By 2025, they are aimed to boost the production of STEM degrees from 9,605 to an impressive 22,500 annually.
Progress carried through the years, and in 2014, the university stood as a hopeful applicant for regional accreditation. A delay came in March 2016 when it was announced that the initial deadline for the accreditation - December 2016 - would not be met. Eventually, in 2017, the coveted acknowledgement from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges was granted.
Let's take you along to the momentous occasion on January 3, 2017, marking the inception of a proud tradition -the inaugural commencement ceremony. An applaudable total of 18 degrees were awarded, 14 for Master of Science and 4 Bachelor of Science. The speaker to grace this event was none other than JD Alexander, the influential former State Senator himself. Thus, the campus stands today as a testament to his vision and advocacy. It's a placed named proudly after the catalyst of STEM education in Lakeland- Alexander.
