Picture this: It's April 20, 1887, when a dedicated group of Presbyterian missionaries, clergymen, and laymen, including some individuals you may have heard of – James George Bell, Lyman Stewart, and Thomas Bard – came together to establish Occidental College. The foundations of the college's first establishment were set in the soulful neighborhood of Boyle Heights, now known as East Los Angeles.
The college officially started its journey a year later, offering the combination of knowledge and discipline to 40 young minds – 27 young men and 13 young women – at a modest tuition of $50 per year. However, the early journey was not without its challenges. By 1896, the Boyle Heights was sadly destroyed by fire.
But you know what they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Without losing hope, the college found temporary shelter at the old St. Vincent's College campus on Hill Street. Popularity of the college soared as it received presidential visits – starting with the arrival of William Howard Taft in 1909 and Theodore Roosevelt in 1911.
While merging with Pomona College was suggested in 1909, Occidental College decided to stay independent and specified itself as a non-sectarian, non-denominational institution. Concurrently, it was becoming clear to the trustees that they needed a bigger campus that was free from the interruption of regular freight trains.
A shiny new chapter began for Occidental College in 1912 when construction for a new campus kicked off in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles. This new campus, designed by the renowned California architect Myron Hunt, who is also known for his work on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) campus and the Huntington Library and Art Gallery, was a sight to behold. However, this year also brought controversy, as a proposed decision to make Occidental an all-men's institution stirred outrage among students and faculty – and it was rightfully abandoned.
World War I saw the college forming a Students Army Training Corps to support the war effort. By 1914, three new halls – Swan, Fowler, and Johnson – were dedicated at the new Eagle Rock campus. The college also opened Patterson Field, one of the oldest collegiate sports stadiums in Los Angeles, in 1916.
Major changes continued to take place in the following years, particularly under the leadership of President Remsen Bird. By the time, English novelist Aldous Huxley made fun of President Bird in one of his novels in 1939, we had seen the birth of many Hunt-designed buildings and the establishment of a Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Occidental.
War hit again during World War II, with many students making the brave choice to leave the college to fight. However, this war also revealed the compassionate side of President Bird who worked arduously to ensure that Japanese students continued their education despite mandatory evacuation orders.
The college has also seen its share of student activism, including a peaceful student protest against military recruiting on campus in 1969. The introduction of co-ed dormitories and the appointment of its first black president, John Brooks Slaughter, later on also indicated signs of progress and inclusivity at Occidental.
Occidental has faced its trials too, especially after being one of the 55 higher education institutions investigated by the U.S. Department of Education in 2014 for possible violations of federal laws over handling sexual violence and harassment. However, the college seemed to learn and grow from this experience by introducing a new interim sexual misconduct policy and establishing the Sexual Misconduct Advisory Board made up of students, faculty, and staff.
Interesting fact for you – President Barack Obama was once a student on these very hallowed grounds. Not to mention, in July 2020, Occidental welcomed its 16th president, Harry J. Elam, Jr. This is the rich, diverse, and inspiring history that surrounds Occidental College, undoubtedly a tremendous place to mold the minds and characters of promising young students.
