Picture this - it's 1972 in sunny Santa Monica, and a band of bold educators, including Ray Kappe, Shelly Kappe, Ahde Lahti, Thom Mayne, Bill Simonian, Glen Small, and James Stafford, find themselves at odds with the conventional system of architecture education at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. They were members of the faculty, brimming with ideas and bursting with vision, but were largely discontented with existing attitudes towards students and educators. So, they decided to shake things up.
Their motivation led to the creation of what they originally called "the New School". Southern California Institute of Architecture, or more widely known as SCI-Arc, was born from a notion that was subversive yet brilliant - a "college without walls". Their goal was to break free from the shackles of tradition, and redefine educational paradigms in the world of architecture.
In the novel ecosystem of SCI-Arc, students and professors worked side by side, as equals. The students were now in the driver's seat, taking charge of their academic journeys and steering their courses of study. One of the most influential figures in this horizon-exploring dyad was Ray Kappe - the founding rock of Cal Poly’s Department of Architecture, and the indefatigable first director of SCI-Arc.
Under Kappe’s leadership till 1987, the school thrived, and his immense contribution to the sphere of architecture education earned him the coveted AIA/ACSA Topaz Medal in 1990. The baton then passed onto Michael Rotondi, one of SCI-Arc's original students, under whose guidance the school's legacy continued.
However renewed the school's spirit, leadership transitions and financial challenges to stay afloat remained a rite of passage. And it did so successfully. After Rotondi, Neil Denari took over in 1997, followed by Eric Owen Moss in 2002, who joked once, "We used to be considered one step ahead of the IRS, one step ahead of creditors" - an indication of the school's checkered financial past.
It was only in 2015, when Hernán Díaz Alonso took charge as the school's Director and Chief Executive Officer, that SCI-Arc truly began to towel-off the remnants of its struggling past. Díaz Alonso, a faculty member since 2001, was known for his progressive views on pushing the school towards the digital future. Before his promotion, he had held the position of the school's Graduate Programs Chair since 2010.
In its transformative journey, from an unaccredited institution to one with strong financial footings, one of its crowning achievements came in 2011 when SCI-Arc purchased its campus building for a whopping $23.1 million. Though marked by trials and triumphs, Díaz Alonso envisions a future where "SCI-Arc keeps growing without losing its character and pedigree."
So there you have it – a tale of rebellion, revival, and relentless pursuit of change that makes SCI-Arc one of the world’s few independent architecture schools today. A place where the future of architecture education is continually restructured and reimagined. Who knows, maybe your future too!
