At the very centre of it was a stalwart figure, General Rufus Putnam, fondly called the "Father of Ohio", who kindled the flame of higher education in the region.
It all started with the Muskingum Academy. August of 1797 marked the completion of this fresh phenomenon, the first of its kind in the Northwest Territory. The Academy wasn't simply another institution, it was the gateway to "classical instruction... in the higher branches of an English education." But the evolution of the Muskingum Academy didn't stop there.
