Breathe in the past, the story of Florida Memorial University goes back to pennings in history books. It all began in the sunny state of Florida, in 1879, in a city called Live Oak. The modest birth of what we now know as Florida Memorial University started as Florida Baptist Institute. Just a year later, in 1880, under the leadership of the Reverend J.L.A. Fish, they were ready to embark on their first-ever academic year. Sadly, racial tension soon darkened the horizon forcing the attitudes of the times to challenge the noble pursuits of the school.
Well, wind the clocks to April 1892, and a moment that drastically changed the course of the institute shows up. Gunshots fired into the school premises sent Rev. Matthew Gilbert and his team packing from Live Oak to Jacksonville. But they didn't let adversity break them; instead, they re-established the institute in the basement of Bethel Baptist Church and named it the Florida Baptist Academy. Do you know who spearheaded the teaching then? A lady named Sarah Ann Blocker. Despite the departure, the school in Live Oak found its way to continue its operation.
Fast forward four years, and a strategic amalgamation took place. The president of Florida Baptist Institute, Nathan W. Collier, joined hands with Sarah Ann Blocker, from Florida Baptist Academy, and established Florida Normal and Technical Institute in 1896. It's on record that Collier held the presidential reigns from 1896 right up until 1941.
In 1900, enduring "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing", created by brothers James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson, was birthed. Widely acknowledged as the "Negro National Anthem," it stands as a testament to the spirit of resilience and unity.
Did you know in 1918, the institute moved to a 110-acre plot that was the site of the "Old Hanson Plantation,” a place once marked by forced labor of enslaved African Americans? In 1941, a merger within the institute expanded its horizons from a junior college to a full-fledged four-year liberal arts institution. The renowned author Zora Neale Hurston even graced the premises as a teacher in 1942.
Let's move on to 1950 when the school underwent a name transformation to Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College, and a further modification in 1963 to Florida Memorial College. Along with the 1960s came the civil rights movement, during which the college faced uncomfortable racial upheavals, they decided to purchase land in rural Dade County in 1965.
Shifting to present Miami in 1968, the college graduated its first class just four years later on this new campus. They celebrated a 100-year milestone in 1979 and initiated numerous expansions in the 44-acre campus.
As the route to progress continued in 2006 the college adopted the name we know today, Florida Memorial University, reflecting the institute's expansion and commitment to higher education. In 2013 the University appointed its first female President, Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, and she then left to become the first female President of Benedict College in 2017.
Owing to its heritage, rich history, and dedicated educators, today, the university stands as a beacon of knowledge and perseverance against all odds, reminding students from around the globe that determination powers forward, no matter the hardships faced. And that's the story, a heritage stretching back 138 years into history, a tale not just of academic growth but of resilience, respect, and progress. Yeah, that's Florida Memorial University for you.
