Once upon a time, back in 1855, a visionary named Evan Pugh got an idea. He didn't just get up one day and announce, "Ok guys, let's create the Pennsylvania State University!" No, it's a more engaging story. Inspired by the Morrill Act that was yet to come, Evan Pugh used his hichki (intuition) and established what is known today as Pennsylvania State University or Penn State for friends.
Would you believe that Penn State initially was an high school?! Yep, that's right! Started as a mere high school, it got the prestigious university status in 1863 under the presidency of Mr. Pugh himself. Within 8 years, mind you. If that's not quick progress, what is?
But then a twist in the tale occurred! Our hero Evan Pugh sadly left us in 1864, leaving Penn in a bit of a soup. Enter George Atherton, the new president, picked up the baton in 1882.
As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Under his able leadership, The University not only survived, it did kamaal (excellence). From a paltry enrolment of 64 students in 1883, the numbers reached 1,000 in 1930. Talk about a ten-fold increase!
Another interesting thing - Penn is a land-grant university. I know it sounds heavy, but it's simple. As a land-grant university, it has a duty to give a wholesome education - and Penn does it with style! They offer everything from engineering to music – a wholesome combo of naatak (drama) and ganit (maths).
Then came World War II, and the story turned a bit sad. Men had to go to war, it seemed. But, while the men were away, the ladies came into the picture in 1945, breaking the 'boys-only club' norm.
But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. The post-War period saw a boom in enrollments - with the G.I. Bill, many veterans got a chance to study - increasing diversity faster than a popcorn can pop.
Also, let's speak some numbers here. Money matters, isn't it? So, in 2015-2016, Penn State stood third in the list of American universities for the amount of money they raised - $3.6 billion, can you imagine?! Itna paisa (so much money), I got two heart attacks and a hiccup!
What about some sports ka tadka (flavor)? Nittany Lion, the official mascot since 1904, is a celebrity. His name comes from Mount Nittany and it's as easy as that! So next time you're around, don't forget to give him a high five.
Here's a thought to go away with - if you want to become a Penn Stater, as the students call themselves, remember there's only one entrance exam and that's your determination. With around 98,000 students, Penn State is always open for you.
Now, the above told tale is not too long, and certainly not about the 'boring old days'. It's a shining example of how a mere idea can transform into an institution of global repute. Happy schooling!
