Imagine an inspiring journey that began on Boston's Beacon Street in the year 1879. This is the journey of Curry College, which started its humble beginnings as the School of Elocution and Expression by Anna Baright. Just two years after she graduated from the Boston University School of Oratory, Baright used her skills - so good, one of her professors hailed her as "the greatest woman reader in the country" - to lay the foundation of what would become a prestigious institution.
But let's rewind a bit to this era when oratory was a prime skill, one that even luminaries like Charles Dickens and Mark Twain displayed while reading lengthy pieces of their work for lofty sums. In that time, in 1882 in fact, Baright wedded her heart to fellow Boston University alumnus, Samuel Silas Curry - a minister also steeped in the art of oratory.
In this blossoming institution, many distinguished Bostonians found space on its Board. Recognize the name, Alexander Graham Bell? Yes, the inventor of the telephone! His father, Alexander Melville Bell, Harvard President Charles W. Eliot, and author William Dean Howells, all graced the Board and left their imprint on the institution. The student list too was no less illustrious, boasting names like Smiley Blanton and Sara Stinchfield Hawk, personalities who later emerged as stalwarts in speech language pathology.
As the years rolled on, the institution evolved too. In 1885, it transformed into the School of Expression and three years later, received its charter from the state. Silas Curry took the reins as the head and Anna Baright Curry slipped into the role of a professor. In 1907, Alexander Graham Bell, Anna's former professor, assumed the position of the school's first chancellor. He remained at the helm until 1922, when death took him away. But, the institution carried on under the guidance of the Currys.
As milestones passed, the institution changed addresses in 1932, moving into Bigelow Mansion at 251 Commonwealth Avenue nestled in the Back Bay. It was in the same year that Curry started offering a radio broadcasting major, a pioneering initiative even recognized today as the oldest in the country. By 1938, it had obtained powers to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Science of Oratory and Master of Science of Oratory. The year 1943 brought more than just the end of World War II, it also brought a name change for the institution to reflect its founders - Curry College.
Almost a decade later, in 1952, Curry College made another move, this time to Milton, Massachusetts, its present home. It continued to emphasize communication and self-development but also became diverse in its curriculum. The following year, it was equipped to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. The first ones rolled out in 1955.
Striding through the 1960s, Curry flourished under the leadership of President John Hafer. A former Academic Dean at Coe College and Dean of Admissions at Syracuse University, he led the institution through extensive curricular changes and initiated fundraising and building campaigns. He helmed the institution until 1979, but his work continued to influence Curry, growing it to its current glories with a vibrant student body and a substantial endowment.
Like the bright threads in a tapestry, the accomplishments of Curry are woven through the years. In 1973, it launched a pioneering educational program named The Program for Advancement of Learning (PAL) to help students with language-based learning difficulties. Its commitment to teachers continued when in 1970, it absorbed Perry Normal School and later, in 1977, it converted the Children's Hospital Nursing School into a four-year degree-granting program.
From the 1980s to the present, Curry continues to evolve. Today, it offers 10 majors and 15 minors and concentrations. It has also grown geographically, expanding its campus. The picturesque campus of Jeanne d'Arc Academy, a Catholic girls' secondary school that adjoined Curry, now forms part of Curry's South Campus. The main entrance of the erstwhile Academy is now the main entrance to the Curry campus.
So, look at how far Curry College has come - from its humble beginnings on Beacon Street to a prestigious institution in Milton. But throughout that journey, it has never forgotten its roots or its commitment to the power of words, a legacy of its founders. This is Curry College - a place that nurtures talent, fosters communication, and encourages self-development.
